THIS COURSE AIMS INTRODUCING THE STUDENT TO THE OBSERVATION AND UNDERSTANDING OF NATURAL PHENOMENA USING THE GALILEAN SCIENTIFIC METHOD. THE STUDENT WILL BECOME FAMILIAR WITH THE PROPERTIES OF MATTER AND THE THERMODYNAMIC AND KINETIC LAWS THAT GOVERN CHEMICAL TRANSFORMATIONS, DEMONSTRATING THAT HE /SHE IS ABLE TO APPLY THEM TO SPECIFIC CASES. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE LOGICAL AND SYSTEMATIC REASONING, AND SHOW HAVING THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN CHEMICAL SCIENCES THAT ALLOW HIM/HER TO SUCCESSFULLY PROCEED IN STUDYING ORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND BIOCHEMISTRY IN THE FORTHCOMING YEARS. THE COURSE AIMS FURNISHING BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: ATOMIC THEORY AND THE PERIODIC TABLE OF THE ELEMENTS. STOICHIOMETRY. THE CHEMICAL BOND. THE SOLID STATE OF MATTER. THE REAL AND PERFECT GAS. LIQUIDS AND SOLUTIONS. THERMODYNAMICS. ACIDS AND BASES. ELECTROLYTES AND SOLUBILITY. KINETICS. ELECTROCHEMISTRY. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO ANTICIPATE THE CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ELEMENTS FROM THEIR POSITION IN THE PERIODIC TABLE, THE PROPERTIES OF THE CORRESPONDING COMPOUNDS, TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF TEH CHEMICAL EQUATION AND ITS BALANCING, TO IDENTIFY THE KINETIC AND THERMODYNAMIC FACTORS GOVERNING THE CHEMICAL REACTION. THE SUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY: A) THE BASIC LAWS OF CHEMISTRY FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE PHYSICAL CHEMICAL PROPERTIES (BOILING POINT, EVAPORATION, FREEZING, SOLUBILITY , PH) OF PURE SUBSTANCES AND SOLUTIONS; B) ANALYTICAL METHODS (VOLUMETRIC ANALYSIS, INDICATORS) AND UNDERSTANDING HOW ELECTROCHEMICAL DEVICES (BATTERY, ACCUMULATORS) WORK. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO USE IN AUTONOMY THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE IN MATHS AND PHYSICS FOR THE QUANTITATIVE DESCRIPTION OF THE EXPERIMENTS AND EVALUATE THE GOODNESS OF THE RESULTS. MOREOVER THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO TRANSFER CHEMICAL INFORMATION TO NOT SPECIALIZED PEOPLE IN SIMPLE WAY AND USE CHEMISTRY FOR THE UNDESTANDING OF NATURAL PHENOMENA IN BIOLOGICAL, NATURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL FIELDS. |

THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED IN LESSONS (8CFU; 64H) SUPPORTED BY A SLIDE SHOW IN WHICH THE SUBJECT IS DISCUSSED AND PRESENTED USING THE EXPERIMENTAL SCIENTIFIC APPROACH (GALILEAN METHOD). PRACTICE IN PROBLEM SOLVING (2 CFU; 24H) WILL HELP THE STUDENTS TO : A) THE QUANTITATIVE UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHEMICAL REACTIONS; B) THE USE OF THE STOICHIOMETRIC COEFFICIENTS; C) APPLY THE THERMODYNAMIC CRITERIA FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE EVOLUTION OF THE CHEMICAL REACTIONS. |

THE ASSESSMENT AT THE END OF THE COURSE AND IN THE SUPPLEMENTARY SESSIONS INCLUDES A WRITTEN TEST FOLLOWED BY THE ORAL EXAM. THE ADMISSION TO THE ORAL EXAM IS ALLOWED ONLY TO THE STUDENTS WHO PASSED THE WRITTEN TEXT PROVIDING THE CORRECT SOLUTION TO, AT LEAST, THREE PROBLEMS (QUESTIONS) OF SIX IN 2H. THE WRITTEN TEST INCLUDES PROBLEMS (QUESTIONS) RELATED TO THE SUBJECT DISCUSSED IN THE LESSONS. THE ORAL EXAM CONSISTS OF A DISCUSSION (20 MIN) ON THE MAIN SUBJECTS OF THE PROGRAM AND AIMS TO ASSESS THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE PROPERTIES OF MATTER AND THE LAWS GOVERNING THE CHEMICAL TRANSFORMATIONS. THE FINAL EVALUATION IS EXPRESSED WITH MARKS (18- 30 PTS) AND TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE WRITTEN TEST (50%) AND ORAL EXAM (50%). |
