Objectives
Knowledge on transport phenomena fundamentals, constitutive equations, equations of change (momentum, energy, mass). Compact statement of the conservation principles, along with the flux expressions, with emphasis on the similarities and differences among the three transport processes considered.
Understanding and management of relevance of transport phenomena in pharmaceutical science.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS, ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY, PHARMACOLOGY AND PHARMACOTHERAPY.
INTERMEDIATE KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE
Contents
THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO FIVE MAIN PARTS:
PART I. BASIC DEFINITIONS IN TRANSPORT PHENOMENA (5 HRS).
PART II. MOMENTUM TRANSFER: NEWTON’S LAW – EQUATION, EXAMPLES, EXERCISES (3 HRS).
PART III. HEAT TRANSFER: FOURIER’S LAW – EQUATION, EXAMPLES, EXERCISES (3 HRS)
PART IV. MASS TRANSFER: FICK’S LAW – EQUATION, EXAMPLES, EXERCISES (3 HRS).
PART V. MATHEMATICAL FORMULATION OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS. APPLICATIONS TO TRANSPORT PHENOMENA IN PHARMACEUTICS (6 HRS).
Teaching Methods
LECTURES
Verification of learning
ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES IS CERTIFIED BY THE PASSING OF AN EXAM, CONSISTENT IN A WRITTEN TEST OF ONE HOUR, WITH OPEN ANSWERS ON SUBJECTS REGARDING BASIC EQUATIONS OF TRANSPORT, PHYSICAL MECHANISMS, MAIN DIMENSIONLESS NUMBERS, AND IN AN ORAL TEST NOT EXCEEDING 30 MINUTES ON THE SUBJECTS OF THE WRITTEN TASK. THE PROOF ENABLES TO CHECK THE LEVEL OF ACQUISITION OF SKILL, OF CORRECT TERMINOLOGY, OF ABILITY OF ANALYSIS, WHICH SHOULD CONSTITUTE THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE. THE EVALUATION TAKES INTO ACCOUNT SYNTHESIS AND EXPOSURE ABILITY, LANGUAGE APPROPRIATENESS; CAPACITY OF ANALYSIS.
