Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE OF SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE. BY THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL IMPROVE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEXTS AND CONTEXTS, AND WILL BE ABLE AUTONOMOUSLY TO RE-ELABORATE THE MATERIAL THEY HAVE STUDIED ALSO IN ENGLISH. THEY WILL ALSO BE CONFIDENT ABOUT THEIR USE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO TEXTS. ADDITIONALLY, THEY WILL DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN VARIOUS PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS.

THE COURSE AIMS TO STUDY THE VICTORIAN AGE, ANALYSING THE MOST RELEVANT ASPECTS OF ITS LITERATURE AND CULTURE. IT WILL FOCUS ON THE NOVEL AND SOME OF ITS SUB-GENRES, SUCH AS THE BILDUNGSROMAN, THE INDUSTRIAL NOVEL AND SENSATION FICTION. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO FEMALE WRITING.

STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE TO BE ABLE TO: DISCUSS THE TEXTS AND THE THEMES OF THE COURSE; EXPRESS THEMSELVES CLEARLY AND FLUENTLY IN ITALIAN; READ AND UNDERSTAND CHOSEN PASSAGES IN ENGLISH FROM THE PRIMARY TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE READING LIST; RELATE AUTHORS AND TEXTS TO THEIR HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT; SELECT AND MEMORISE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DATA.
