HE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO ENRICH THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE AND ENHANCE AN IN-DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE LITERARY PHENOMENA AND THE SOCIOCULTURAL EXPERIENCES RELATED TO THEM. IT WILL ALSO ENABLE STUDENTS TO DEVELOP INSTRUMENTS OF ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL INTERPRETATION OF THE LITERARY TEXT. |

THE COURSE WILL CONCENTRATE ON THE PRESENCE OF THE CIRCUS IN 19TH AND 20TH CENTURY ENGLISH CULTURE AND LITERATURE. IT WILL ANALYSE NOVELS BELONGING TO BOTH THE VICTORIAN PERIOD AND THE 20TH CENTURY ALSO FOCUSING ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ARTS (THE CIRCUS IS WIDELY PRESENT IN PAINTING AND CINEMA), THE NATURE OF PERFORMANCE AND POPULAR ENTERTAINMENT. |

STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO DISCUSS CRITICALLY THE LITERARY AND CRITICAL TEXTS THAT ARE THE FOCUS OF THE COURSE; TO MASTER APPROPRIATE METHODOLOGIES FOR THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY AND CULTURAL TEXTS; TO RE-ELABORATE THEMES OF THE COURSE AUTONOMOUSLY. PART OF THE FINAL EVALUATION COULD BE WRITTEN ESSAYS AND GROUP PRESENTATIONS ON THEMES AGREED UPON WITH THE LECTURER. |
