Objectives
The course aims to the acquisition of system knowledge in telecommunication systems (fixed, mobile, circuit and packet switching) that allow activities for the analysis and design of tlc systems and networks with limited complexity.

Knowledge and understanding competence
Understanding of the terms used in the context of telecommunication systems (fixed and mobile), of reference architectures for circuit and packet switching, of the standard protocols, of the quality parameters .

Applying knowledge and understanding
Being able to analyse the characteristics of a specific tlc system subject to certain requrements fo traffic volumes, quality of service, costs, and to design simple tlc systems.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF PROBABILITY, SIGNAL THEORY, TRANSMISSION TECHNIQUES, AS DELIVERED IN PREVIOUS COURSES
Contents
TELECOMMUNICATIONS ARCHITECTURES AND SERVICES. PHYSICAL LAYER. DLC. NETWORK LAYER. TRANSPORT LAYER. SESSION LAYER AND HIGHER LEAYERS. PSTN. RADIO ACCESS. GSM.GPRS AND EGPRS. THIRD GENERETION NETWORKS
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS COMPOSED OF LECTURES AND EXERCISES IN RESPECTIVE PROPORTIONS 65% AND 35%. THE LATTER ARE DEVELOPPED WITH THE HELP OF THE SW APPLICATION NS2 FOR THE SIMULATION OF TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORALL DISCUSSION WITH THE MAIN GOAL OF ASSESSING THE KNOWLEDGE AND THE COMPREHENSION OF THE SUBJECT DEVELOPPED DURING THE COURSE; A SECONDARY OBJECTIVE IS TO ASSESS THE JUDGEMENT AUTONOMY AND THE APPREHENSION CAPACITY. THE QUALITY OF PRESENTATION IS ANOTHER FACTOR OF EVALUATION. THE "LAUDE" CAN BE GRANTED TO STUDENTS WHO WILL SHOW A COMPLETE PROFICIENCY ON BOTH THEORETICAL AND APPLICATIVE ASPECTS.
