Objectives
THE COURSE PROVIDES THE MAIN TECHNIQUES FOR THE EVALUATION OF ELECTRICAL IN CIRCUITS COMPOSED IN DYNAMICAL CONDITIONS IN TIME AND FREQUENCY DOMAINS. THE PROPERTIES OF THREE PHASE CIRCUITS ARE DISCUSSED. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS ARE OBTAINED FROM FIELD QUANTITIES; THE EQUIVALENT MODELS AS A FUNCTION OF FREQUENCY ARE PRESENTED.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL KNOW:
- METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF DYNAMIC CIRCUITS OF FIRST AND SECOND ORDER (IN TIME DOMAIN AND IN THE DOMAIN OF COMPLEX FREQUENCY USING THE LAPLACE TRANSFORM
- METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF THREE PHASE CIRCUITS-
- METHODS TO ANALYZE SIMPLE MAGNETIC CIRCUITS CONTAINING IDEAL FERROMAGNETIC MATERIALS
- CHARACTERISTICS OF A RESONANT CIRCUIT

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ABILITY TO APPLY (APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING)
AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- CARRY OUT CIRCUITS ANALYSIS OF FIRST AND SECOND ORDER LINEAR TIME INVARIANT DYNAMIC CIRCUITS BOTH IN TIME DOMAIN AND IN THE DOMAIN OF COMPLEX GREQUENCY (LAPLACE TRANSFORM TECHNIQUE)
- PERFORM CALCULATION OF TENSION, CURRENT POWER AND ENERGY SYSTEMS IN THREE PHASE CIRCUITS
- CALCULATE AUTO AND MUTUAL INDUCTION COEFFICIENTS IN SIMPLE MAGNETIC CIRCUITS
- ANALYZE RESONANT CIRCUITS AND EVALUATE CHARACTERISTIC PARAMTERS

MAKING JUDGMENTS
ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR ANALYZING LINEAR TIME INVARIANT CIRCUITS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DESCRIBE IN A CLEAR AND CONCISE WRITTEN AND ORAL FORM THE ADOPTED PROCESS AND THE RESULTS OF THE CALCULATIONS PERFORMED.

LEARNING SKILLS
THE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE AND TO DEEPEN THE TOPICS USING MULTIPLE SOURCES AND MATERIALS.
Prerequisites
A PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS IS REQUIRED:
- BASIC PHYSICS CONCERNING ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC FIELDS
- SOLUTION METHODS FOR LINEAR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS. - SOLUTION METHODS FOR LINEAR CIRCUITS IN DC AND AC (PROVIDED IN ELECTRIC CIRCUITS ANALYSIS I).

- DYNAMIC TWO-PORTS (10H LECTURES, 5H EXERCISE). MUTUAL INDUCTANCE AND COUPLED CIRCUITS EQUATIONS. IDEAL TRANSFORMERS. EQUIVALENT CIRCUITS FOR REAL TRANSFORMS. MAGNETIC CIRCUITS. EVALUATION OF AUTO AND MUTUAL INDUCTANCES FOR SIMPLE MAGNETIC STRUCTURES.

- TIME DOMAIN SOLUTION OF DYNAMIC (FIRST AND SECOND ORDER) LINEAR TIME INVARIANT CIRCUITS (10H LECTURES, 10H EXERCISE, 3H SIMULATION LAB). ZERO-STATE AND ZERO-INPUT RESPONSE. STEP AND DIRAC DELTA FUNCTION. EVALUATION OF THE IMPULSE RESPONSE. CONVOLUTION INTEGRAL.

- FREQUENCY CHARACTERISTICS OF ELECTRIC CIRCUITS (5H LECTURES, 5H EXERCISE, 2H SIMULATION LAB). LAPLACE TRANSFORM, OPERATIONAL IMPEDANCE; TRANSFER FUNCTION; INVERSE TRANSFMORMATION; NETWORK FUNCTIONS, RESONANCE IN RLC CIRCUITS.

- AC THREE PHASE CIRCUITS (5H LECTURES, 5H EXERCISE). STAR AND DELTA CONNECTED LOADS; BALANCED AND UNBALANCED SYSTEMS; POWER IN THREE PHASE CIRCUITS. POWER FACTOR CORRECTION.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES CLASSROOM LECTURES AIMED AT PRESENTING THE THEORY AND NUMERICAL EXCERCISES TO STRENGTHEN THE OPERATIONAL SKILLS. THE EXERCISES ASSIGNED TO STUDENTS ARE SOLVED IN CLASS BY THE TEACHER USING THE TECHNIQUES PRESENTED IN THEORY LECTURES. THE EXCERCISES ARE LED BY THE TEACHER TO DEVELOP THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE SOLUTION TECHNIQUES AND PRESENT THE RESULTS IN A CLEAR AND EFFICIENT WAY.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF LEARNING OBJECTIVES IS CARRIED OUT BY AN EXAM COMPOSED OF A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL TEST.

THE MINIMUM GRADE IS 18/30 AND THE MAXIMUM IS 30/30 WITH LAUDE. THE STUDENT MUST PASS WITH A MINIMUM GRADE OF 18/30 THE WRITTEN TEST TO BE ADMITTED TO THE ORAL EXAM.
DURING THE COURSE TWO PARTIAL WRITTEN TESTS ARE PROPOSED. IF THE STUDENTS PASS THE PARTIAL TESTS THEY ARE ADMITTED TO THE ORAL TEST.

- THE WRITTEN TEST, TO BE CARRIED OUT IN 90 MINUTES, INCLUDES TWO EXERCISES TO EVALUATE THE OPERATIONAL SKILLS CONCERNING THE STUDY IN THE TIME DOMAIN OF 2ND ORDER (RLC) AND THREE-PHASE CIRCUITS. IN PARTICULAR, THE FIRST EXERCISE CONCERNS THE EVALUATION OF THE INITIAL CONDITIONS AND THE COMPLETE RESPONSE OF THE CIRCUIT, EVEN IN THE PRESENCE OF IMPULSE GENERATORS. THE SECOND EXERCISE CONCERNS A BALANCED OR UNBALANCED THREE-PHASE CIRCUIT IN WHICH IT IS REQUIRED TO CALCULATE VOLTAGES, CURRENTS IN THE LOADS AND IN-LINE AND THE POWER ABSORBED. IT MAY BE REQUIRED TO CARRY OUT THE PHASE CORRECTION OF A REACTIVE LOAD.
- THE ORAL TEST, IN WHICH THE STUDY OF CIRCUITS MAY BE STILL REQUIRED, IS AIMED AT EVALUATING THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE, THE AUTONOMY OF ANALYSIS AND JUDGMENT, AND THE EXHIBITION CAPACITY OF THE STUDENT. IN PARTICULAR, QUESTIONS ARE PROPOSED ON RESONANT CIRCUITS, ON MUTUAL MAGNETIC COUPLINGS, ON THE ANALYSIS OF MAGNETIC CIRCUITS, ON THE USE OF THE LAPLACE TRANSFORM.
THE EVALUATION OF THE TESTS TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS TO ANALYZE THE VARIOUS CIRCUITS, THE ABILITY TO PRESENT THE OBJECTIVES, THE PROCEDURE AND THE RESULTS IN A CLEAR AND CONCISE MANNER, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO INVESTIGATE THE TOPICS COVERED USING MATERIALS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED.
THE MINIMUM GRADE (18/30) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES UNCERTAINTIES IN THE APPLICATION OF THE SOLUTION METHODS OF THE PROPOSED CIRCUITS, HAS LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN PROPERTIES OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPONENTS AND CIRCUITS AND LOW EXPOSITORY CAPACITY.
THE MAXIMUM LEVEL (30/30) IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OF THE METHODS AND IS ABLE TO SOLVE THE PROPOSED PROBLEMS BY IDENTIFYING THE MOST APPROPRIATE TECHNIQUES TO ANALYZE THE CIRCUITS AND SHOWS A REMARKABLE ABILITY TO CONNECT AND EXPOSE THE PROPERTIES OF THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF COMPONENTS AND CIRCUITS.
THE FINAL GRADE IS OBTAINED AS THE AVERAGE OF THE WRITTEN AND ORAL TESTS.
THE LAUDE IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE CANDIDATE SHOWS A SIGNIFICANT MASTERY OF THE THEORETICAL AND OPERATIONAL CONTENTS AND SHOWS THE ABILITY TO PRESENT THE TOPICS WITH REMARKABLE PROPERTIES OF LANGUAGE AND AUTONOMOUS PROCESSING CAPACITY EVEN IN CONTEXTS DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER.
