Objectives
THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THIS COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF THERMODYNAMICS AND ITS APPLICATION IN THE DESIGN OF SIMPLE THERMAL PLANTS.
Prerequisites
FOR THE SUCCESSFUL ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES, THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC NOTIONS AS GIVEN IN THE FIRST YEAR COURSES OF MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICS IS REQUIRED.

INTRODUCTION TO THERMODYNAMICS; EQUILIBRIUM THERMODYNAMICS; FIRST AND SECOND LAWS OF THERMODYNAMICS; THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES OF GASES, VAPORS, AND GAS-VAPOR MIXTURES; ENERGY-SYSTEMS ANALYSIS INCLUDING POWER CYCLES, REFRIGERATION CYCLES AND AIR-CONDITIONING PROCESSES. THE USE OF THE FIRST LAW IN THE ANALYSIS OF CLOSED THERMODYNAMIC SYSTEMS. UNDERSTANDING THE USE OF THE FIRST LAW IN THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF DEVICES SUCH AS HEAT EXCHANGERS, PIPING, COMPRESSORS, PUMPS USING CONTROL VOLUMES.
ENTROPY RATE BALANCES IN THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF DEVICES SUCH AS TURBINES, COMPRESSORS, ETC. SIZING HEAT PLANTS.
Teaching Methods
LESSONS AND EXERCISES ARE PROVIDED IN THE CLASSROOM. SELECTED EXERCISES ARE ASSIGNED TO THE STUDENTS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THERMODYNAMICS, THERMAL PLANTS AND ENERGY CONVERSION SYSTEMS.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE PREFIXED OBJECTIVES WILL BE REALIZED BY WRITTEN TEST AND ORAL INTERVIEW. THE LATTER, IS TO BE HELD NECESSARILY IN THE SAME SESSION IN WHICH THE WRITTEN TEST IS PASSED. THE INTERVIEW IS TYPICALLY SCHEDULED SEVEN DAYS AFTER THE WRITTEN TEST.
