UNDERSTANDING THE MAIN ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION. THE STUDENT WILL KNOW THE PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES AND DESIGN OF OPERATIONS INVOLVING: 1) LIQUID-SOLID SEPARATION (SEDIMENTATION); 2) BIOLOGICAL DIGESTION OF EFFLUENTS; 3) GAS-SOLID SEPARATION (FILTRATION, ELECTROSTATIC FILTRATION); 4) THE DISPERSION OF POLLUTANTS (CHIMNEYS).

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING – ENGINEERING ANALYSIS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO ANALYSE THE WORKING CONDITIONS AND OPERATE SEDIMENTATION TANKS, AEROBIC DIGESTION UNITS, ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATORS, FILTERS, CHIMNEYS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING – ENGINEERING DESIGN
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DESIGN THE MAIN FEATURES OF SEDIMENTATION TANKS, AEROBIC DIGESTION UNITS, ELECTROSTATIC PRECIPITATORS, FILTERS, CHIMNEYS.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS - ENGINEERING PRACTICE
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY OPERATIONS, PROCESSES AND EMISSION LIMITS FOR THE DESIGN OF SYSTEMS THAT RESPECT THE EMISSION LIMITS ACCORDING TO THE LAW.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS – TRANSVERSAL SKILLS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO REPORT ON TOPICS RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMICAL ENGINEERING.

LEARNING SKILLS – TRANSVERSAL SKILLS
ABILITY TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO DIFFERENT INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS THAN THOSE REPORTED IN DURING THE COURSE, AND ABILITY TO EXPAND THE COURSE TOPICS BY USING SOURCES AND DIFFERENT THAN THE PROPOSED ONES.
Prerequisites
IN ORDER TO ACCESS THE EXAM, IT IS NECESSARY TO HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE EXAM OF UNIT OPERATION

TOTAL HOURS 60 (TH.45; PR. 15)

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS TAUGHT IN ITALIAN AND CONSISTS IN FRONT LESSONS (45H), AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES (15H) FOR A TOTAL AMOUNT OF 60 HOURS WHICH ARE WORTH 6 CREDITS. TEACHING INVOLVES LECTURES, WITH THE USE OF MULTIMEDIA DEVICES FOR DISPLAYING CURRENT TECHNOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS, AND CLASSROOM PRACTICE. THE LECTURES PROVIDE THE THEORETICAL CONCEPTS AT THE BASIS OF THE TOPICS DISCUSSED. THEORETICAL LECTURES ALSO INCLUDE COMMENTED READING OF SELECTED PARTS OF ITALIAN ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION. CLASSROOM PRACTICE HAS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF PUTTING IN PLACE CALCULATIONS FOR EQUIPMENT DESIGN.

ATTENDANCE OF LECTURES IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
TO PASS THE EXAM, THE STUDENT HAS TO DEMONSTRATE OF BEING ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND TO KNOW HOW TO APPLY THE MAIN CONCEPTS OUTLINED IN THE COURSE. THE EXAM, USUALLY LASTS BETWEEN 30 AND 45 MIN. IT IS MADE UP OF 3 QUESTIONS. THE FIRST FOCUSES ON THE METHODS OF DESIGN AND SIZING OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMICAL ENGINEERING EQUIPMENT. THE SECOND CONCERNS THE APPLICATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION AND ITS EFFECTS ON INDUSTRIAL OPERATIONS OF RELEVANCE TO CHEMICAL ENGINEERING. THE THIRD CONCERNS THE MAIN CONCEPTS OF THE PHYSICS OF ENVIRONMENTAL COMPARTMENTS (WATER SUSTAINABILITY, WASTE, ATMOSPHERE) AND THE QUANTIFICATION AND REGULATION OF IMPACTS. THE THREE QUESTIONS GENERALLY CONCERN DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL COMPARTMENTS.

ESSENTIAL CONDITIONS FOR PASSING THE EXAM ARE: 1) THE ABILITY TO DESCRIBE THE REQUIRED UNIT OPERATIONS, TO IDENTIFY THE PROCESSES TO WHICH THEY APPLY, TO ILLUSTRATE THE EMPIRICAL PROCEDURES FOR THE DESIGN; 2) THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CLASSIFICATION OF EFFLUENTS AND WASTES AND OF WHICH PARTS OF THE LEGISLATION CONTAIN THE EMISSION LIMITS; 3) THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES, IN PARTICULAR THOSE RELATING TO THE POLLUTION OF WATERS, DISPOSAL TECHNIQUES OF WASTES AND THE MAIN POLLUTANTS OF THE ATMOSPHERE.

TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE, THE STUDENT WILL HAVE: 1) TO BE ABLE TO PROPERLY FORMULATE THE BALANCE EQUATIONS AND DERIVE THE RATING EQUATIONS OF THE UNIT OPERATIONS DESCRIBED IN THE COURSE; 2) TO DEMONSTRATE OF BEING ABLE TO PROPERLY ADDRESS PROJECT DESIGN AND VERIFICATION PROCEDURES; 3) TO KNOW THE INSPIRATIONAL PRINCIPLES OF THE LEGISLATION, THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF WATER EFFLUENTS IN RELATION TO THE RECEIVING WATER; 4) TO KNOW WHERE TO FIND THE LIMITS AND HOW THEY ARE EXPRESSED; 5) TO KNOW THE OBLIGATIONS TO REGISTER A WASTE AND ITS DISPOSAL, THE MATERIAL AND CASH FLOWS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF PACKAGING WASTES, THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE VARIOUS AUTHORIZATION PROCEDURES ACCORDING TO THE CHARACTERISTICS AND THE SIZE OF THE PRODUCTIVE ACTIVITIES.
