Objectives
MODULE 1
PROVIDE THE BASIC CONCEPTS THAT WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND AND ADDRESS PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MATERIALS, WITH EMPHASIS BOTH ON TRADITIONAL MATERIALS AND ON NANOMATERIALS.
MODULE 2
IN THIS MODULE ARE DESCRIBED THE PHYSICAL AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION BY WHICH MACROMOLECULES ARE SYNTHESIZED. POLYMERIZATION REACTIONS ARE CHARACTERIZED AS TO THEIR KINETIC AND THERMODYNAMIC FEATURES, THEIR SCOPE AND UTILITY FOR THE SYNTHESIS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF POLYMER STRUCTURES, AND THE PROCESS CONDITIONS, WHICH ARE USED TO CARRY THEM OUT.
THE MAIN ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE WILL BE: I) BASIC CONCEPTS THAT WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND AND ADDRESS PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF MATERIALS, WITH EMPHASIS BOTH ON TRADITIONAL MATERIALS AND ON NANOMATERIALS; II) UNDERSTANDING THE REACTION PARAMETERS, WHICH ARE RESPONSIBLE IN CONTROLLING POLYMERIZATION RATES, POLYMER MOLECULAR WEIGHT AND STRUCTURAL FEATURES SUCH AS STEREOREGULARITY, BRANCHING AND CROSS-LINKS.
THE MAIN CAPABILITIES WILL BE: I) TO SEARCH CHEMICAL PATENTS AND DISCUSS PATENT FEATURES RELEVANT TO MATERIALS CHEMISTRY; II) TO DESIGN A SYNTHETIC PROCESS TO OBTAIN A POLYMER OR COPOLYMER STRUCTURE RESPONDING TO PRECISE REQUIREMENTS. TO CHOOSE THE PROCESS PARAMETERS SUITABLE TO PERFORM THE DESIGNED POLYMER SYNTHESIS.

MODULE 2: TYPES OF POLYMERS AND POLYMERIZATIONS. POLYMER COMPOSITION AND STRUCTURE. POLYMERIZATION MECHANISM. MOLECULAR WEIGHT. PHYSICAL STATE OF POLYMERS.
STEP POLYMERIZATION. REACTIVITY OF FUNCTIONAL GROUPS. ANALYSIS OF POLYMERIZATION KINETICS: EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCES AND THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS. THERMODYNAMICS. MOLECULAR WEIGHT CONTROL AND MOLECULAR WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION. CHAIN POLYMERIZATIONS. RADICAL VERSUS IONIC POLYMERIZATION. MODES OF PROPAGATION. INITIATION IN RADICAL POLYMERIZATION. KINETICS OF CHAIN POLYMERIZATION. SOME INDUSTRIAL POLYMERIZATION PROCESSES.

Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS ESSENTIALLY CONSTITUTED FROM FRONT LESSONS. VISITS TO MATERIAL CHARACTERIZATION LABORATORIES ARE ALSO PLANNED, DURING WHICH THE MAIN INSTRUMENTS USED IN THIS FIELD WILL BE DESCRIBED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE TEACHING IS VERIFIED BY PASSING AN EXAMINATION WITH EVALUATION IN 30TH. THE EXAMINATION SHALL INCLUDE TWO ORAL TESTS, ONE AT THE END OF EACH MODULE. FOR MODULE 1 STUDENTS WILL PRESENT A CHEMICAL PATENT SEARCH ON A TOPIC OF THEIR CHOICE AND DISCUSS ONE OF THE SEARCHED PATENTS, BY HIGHLIGHTING FEATURES RELEVANT TO MATERIALS CHEMISTRY.EACH TEST SHALL BE EVALUATED IN 30TH AND SHALL BE PASSED WITH A MINIMUM OF 18/30. THE FINAL MARK IS THE AVERAGE OF THE VOTES RECORDED IN EACH ORAL TEST.
ALTERNATIVELY, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE A SINGLE ORAL EXAMINATION ON THE TOPICS PRESENTED IN BOTH MODULES.
