Objectives
THE CHEMISTRY COURSE’S MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE METHODOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY APPLIED TO THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. IN PARTICULAR, THE COURSE FOCUSES ON UNDERSTANDING THE MOLECULAR NATURE OF MATTER AND THE CHEMICAL PROCESSES LEADING TO PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS IN SEVERAL INDUSTRIAL FIELDS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE PROGRAMME WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO GAIN:
1) BASIC AND MORE ADVANCED UNDERSTANDING ON:
•THE CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER, UNTIL THE CHEMICAL ELEMENTS;
•REACTIVITY AND TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS;
•STOICHIOMETRY;
•ATOMIC STRUCTURE AND PERIODIC PROPERTIES;
•STATES OF AGGREGATION;
•SOLUTIONS; CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIA;
•ELECTROCHEMISTRY.
2) APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - ENGINEERING ANALYSIS:
•TO BE ABLE TO BALANCE A REACTION,
•TO BE ABLE TO CALCULATE THE PH OF A SOLUTION,
•TO BE ABLE TO SOLVE SIMPLE CHEMICAL AND ELECTROCHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM,
•TO BE ABLE TO USE THE REDOX POTENTIAL.
3) APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - ENGINEERING DESIGN:
STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING TO FOLLOW A PATH FROM THEORETICAL UNDER-STANDING THROUGH CONCEPTUAL ANALYSIS OF PROBLEMS AND DEVELOP AN APPRECIATION OF CONTEXT FOR THE SOLUTION OF CHEMICAL PROBLEMS IN PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES.
4) MAKING JUDGMENTS - ENGINEERING PRACTICE:
•TO BE ABLE TO APPLY THEIR KNOWLEDGE TO DIFFERENT CONTEXTS FROM THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE
5) CROSS COMPETENCIES: COMMUNICATION SKILLS
•TO BE ABLE TO ORALLY EXPOSE A TOPIC RELATED TO CHEMISTRY

6) CROSS COMPETENCIES: ABILITY TO LEARN
•TO BE ABLE TO ADVANCE THEIR LEARNING APPLYING THEIR ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE TO DIFFERENT TOPICS FROM THOSE PROPOSED DURING THE COURSE
Prerequisites
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS AND BASIC PHYSICS, THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND STRUCTURE A LOGICAL THINKING, AND THE ABILITY TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN A LANGUAGE PROPER AND RIGOROUS.

Teaching Methods
THE TEACHING IS DEVELOPED THROUGH LECTURES, TUTORIALS, CHEMISTRY EXSERCISES, TESTS AND LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE ACHIEVEMENT OF OBJECTIVES IS THROUGH A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW. TO PASS THE EXAM, THE STUDENT MUST DEMONSTRATE AN UNDERSTANDING OF AND BE ABLE TO APPLY THE MAIN CONCEPTS PRESENTED IN THE COURSE. THE VOTE, OUT OF THIRTY WITH ANY PRAISE, DEPEND ON THE MATURITY GAINED ON THE COURSE CONTENT, TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE QUALITY OF WRITTEN AND ORAL EXPOSURE AND JUDGMENT DEMONSTRATED.
