THE MAIN EDUCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING GOALS OF THE CLASS ARE CONCERNED WITH THE BASIC ASPECTS OF CONTINUUM MECHANICS (STRESS AND STRAIN; CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS); THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE STRUCTURAL MECHANICS (STATIC, KINEMATIC AND ELASTIC PROBLEMS); ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF BEAMS FOR AXIAL FORCE, SHEAR, BENDING AND TORSION; BASIC ELEMENTS OF ELASTIC STABILITY. WITH REFERENCE TO THE APPLYING KNOWLEDGEMENT AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS, THE CLASS WILL CONFER ABILITIES RELATIVE TO DESCRIPTION OF THE STRESS AND STRAIN FIELDS OF CONTINUOUS BODIES AND THE COMPETENT CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS; THE DESIGN AND MODELING OF BASIC STRUCTURAL SCHEMES; THE ASSESMENT OF THE STABILITY AND STRENGTH CAPACITY OF PLANAR AND SPATIAL STRUCTURAL SCHEMES. |

THE CLASS INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING MODULES: - BASIC CONCEPTS OF CONTINUUM MECHANICS; STRESS AND STRAIN TENSORS; CONSTITUTIVE EQUATIONS; FAILURE CRITERIA (1/4 OF THE CLASS HOURS) - STATICS AND KINEMATICS OF 2D STRUCTURAL SCHEMES: FREE-BODY DIAGRAMS; FUNICULAR POLYGONS AND FORM-FINDING PROBLEMS; AXIAL-FORCE, SHEAR AND BENDING-MOMENT DIAGRAMS (1/4 OF THE CLASS HOURS); - THEORY OF ELASTIC BEAMS: TIMOSHENKO AND EULERO-BERNOULLI THEORIES; PRINCIPLE OF VIRTUAL WORK; INRODUCTION TO FORCE AND DISPLACEMENT METHODS FOR ELASTIC STRUCTURES (1/4 OF THE CLASS HOURS); - DESIGN OF BEAMS AND COLUMNS FOR AXIAL-FORCE, SHEAR AND BENDING, INCLUDING STRENGTH AND STABILITY ANALYSIS (1/4 OF THE CLASS HOURS);. |

THE FINAL TEST IS COMPOSED OF ONE WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW. THE WRITTEN TEST IS CONCERNED WITH THE CLASSIFICATION AND ANALYSIS OF A STATICALLY DETERMINATE STRUCTURE; THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF A PLANE TRUSS; AND THE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF A STATICALLY INDETERMINATE STRUCTURE (ONE AGGREGATE TEST OR THREE SEPARATE TESTS, AS COMUNICATED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE CLASS) THE ORAL INTERVIEW COVERS THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE DIFFERENT CLASS MODULES. |
