OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: TO TEACH THE BASIC ORGANIC CHEMISTRY IN ORDER TO ALLOW THE STUDENT TO CLASSIFY AND REPRESENT THE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, RATIONALISING AND PREDICTING THE REACTIVITY ON THE BASIS OF THE FUNCTIONAL GROUPS PRESENT. STUDENTS ARE MOTIVATED THROUGH A SERIES OF TESTS THROUGH WHICH TO CHECK THEIR PROGRESS, BY MEANS OF EXERCISES AND TASKS BOTH AT HOME AND DURING THE CLASSES. IN A SECOND MODULE, THE THEORY AND METHODS OF PURIFICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS ARE INTRODUCED. IN A THIRD MODULE, THE STUDENT WILL APPLY BASIC METHODS OF PURIFICATIONS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS DURING LABORATORY PRACTICE. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO RECOGNISE THE MOST COMMON FUNCTIONAL GROUPS, GIVE A NAME TO ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, PREDICT THE BASIC REACTIVITY OF SELECTED CLASSES OF ORGANIC MOLECULES AND THE BASIC MECHANISMS INVOLVED. FINALLY, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO CHOOSE THE PROPER METHOD FOR THE PURIFICATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE, IT IS NECESSARY TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY. TO ACCESS THE FINAL EXAMINATION, IT IS NECESSARY TO PASS THE “GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY” EXAM. |

MODULES A COMPRISE TEACHING LESSONS AND EXCERCISES(9 CFU) AT THE BLACKBOARD IN THE CLASSROOM. MODULE B IS ABOUT THE BASIC TECNIQUES FOR THE PURIFICATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. MODULE C IS LABORATORY PRACTICE, 75% ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY. AT THE END OF THE LABORATORY PRACTICE THE STUDENT HAS TO WRITE A SCIENTIFIC REPORT TO BE DELIVERED TO THE LABORATORY TUTOR. MODULE A (80 H): STRUCTURE AND BONDING IN ORGANIC MOLECULES. ACIDS AND BASES. STEREOCHEMISTRY. SYSTEMATIC NOMENCLATURE, STRUCTURES, CHEMICAL-PHYSICS PROPERTIES AND REACTIVITY OF THE MOST COMMON CLASSES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS: ALKANES AND CYCLOALKANES, ALKENES, ALKYNES, ALKYL HALIDES, AROMATIC COMPOUNDS, ALCOHOLS AND TIOLS, ETHERS, EPOXYDES. INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC SYNTHESIS. MODULE B (16 H) : BASIC TECHNIQUES OF PURIFICATION SUCH AS CRISTALLIZATION, ORGANIC SOLVENT EXTRACTION, DISTILLATION, SILICA-GEL CHROMATOGRAPHY, ION-CHROMATOGRAPHY, GEL-PERMEATION CHROMATOGRAPHY, GAS-CHROMATOGRAPHY, HPLC. MODULE C (12 H): PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES OF PURIFICATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS IN THE LABORATORY (CRISTALLIZATION, LIQUID-LIQUID EXTRACTION WITH SOLVENTS, SILICA-GEL PURIFICATION. |

MODULES A AND B COMPRISE TEACHING LESSONS AT THE BLACKBOARD AND EXCERCISES AT THE BLACKBOARD IN THE CLASSROOM (96 H). MODULE C (12 H) IS LABORATORY PRACTICE, 75% ATTENDANCE IS COMPULSORY. DURING THE LABORATORY THE STUDENT WILL APPLY BASIC TECNIQUES TO PURIFY ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. AT THE END OF THE LABORATORY PRACTICE THE STUDENT HAS TO WRITE A SCIENTIFIC REPORT ON THE SYNTHESES PERFORMED IN THE LABORATORY TO BE DELIVERED TO THE LABORATORY TUTOR BEFORE ATTENDING THE EXAM. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE AIM OF THE FINAL EXAM IS TO CHECK THAT THE LEARNING OUTCOMES HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED. THE STUDENT CAN BE EVALUATED ONLY AFTER HAVING DELIVERED THE REPORTS OF RESULTS ON THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK DONE IN THE LABORATORY MODULE THE FINAL EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN EXAM FOLLOWED BY AN ORAL COLLOQUIUM. THE WRITTEN EXAM DEALS WITH THE EXECUTION OF EXERCISES ON THE STEREOCHEMISTRY, REACTIVITY AND SYNTHESIS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. THIS TEST IS AIMED AT VERIFYING WHETHER THE STUDENT HAS DEVELOPED THE SKILL AND ABILITY OF 1) RECOGNIZING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS, 2) PREDICTING THE BEHAVIOR OF A GIVEN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY TRANSFORMATION AMONG THOSE COMPRISED IN THE PROGRAM. THE RESULT OF THE WRITTEN EXAM IS MARKED IN THIRTIETH. A MINIMUM OF EIGHTEEN THIRTIETH IS REQUIRED AS A THRESHOLD. HAVING PASSED THE WRITTEN EXAM, AN ORAL EXAMINATION IS CARRIED OUT AIMED AT VERIFYING KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF THE TOPICS OF THE PROGRAM (MODULES A, B, C) TOGETHER WITH THE COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND THE CORRECT USE OF SPECIALIZED LANGUAGE. TWO PARTIAL EXAMS ( AT THE MIDDLE AND AT THE END OF THE COURSE) WILL BE DONE. THE RESULT OF BOTH WRITTEN EXAMS IS MARKED IN THIRTIETH. STUDENTS WITH A MINIMUM OF EIGHTEEN THIRTIETH, AS MEDIUM VALUE, HAVE DIRECT ADMITTANCE TO ORAL EXAMINATION. |
