Objectives
THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO TEACH THE STUDENT THE CORRECT APPROACH TO THE LITERARY TEXT, ESPECIALLY THE TEXTS OF THE ORIGINS, DEPENDING ON THE GENRE AND THE ERA TO WHICH IT BELONGS. THE COURSE INCLUDES, THROUGH THE READING OF SOME TEXTS PARTICULARLY RELEVANT IN THE EVOLUTION OF THE DIFFERENT EUROPEAN LITERARY GENRES, THE LEARNING OF THE VARIOUS TECHNIQUES OF LITERARY, METRIC-VERSIFICATORIA AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS. THE COURSE ALSO AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH AN INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES TO FILL THE GAP BETWEEN THE TWO DISTANT POLES OF THEIR LINGUISTIC KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTED ON ONE SIDE BY LATIN AND ON THE OTHER BY MODERN ROMANCE LANGUAGES. THEY WILL ALSO ACQUIRE THE TOOLS TO INDEPENDENTLY TRANSLATE ANCIENT FRENCH OR CASTILIAN TEXTS.
AT THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
- COMPARE AND ANALYZE MEDIEVAL LITERARY TEXTS ON THE BASIS OF THE ACQUIRED AWARENESS OF THE SUBSTANTIAL UNITY OF MEDIEVAL LITERATURE;
- ANALYZE LINGUISTIC DATA IN SYNCHRONIC AND DIACHRONIC OPTICS;
- TRANSLATE THE MEDIEVAL TEXTS NOVELS FOLLOWING SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES AND METHODOLOGIES.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ITALIAN LINGUISTICS AND AT LEAST OF ONE ROMANCE LANGUAGE IS REQUIRED. KNOWLEDGE OF LATIN IS DESIRABLE BUT NOT COMPULSORY.

AN INTRODUCTION TO THE HISTORY OF ROMANCE LANGUAGES AND A SURVEY OF MEDIEVAL ROMANCE LITERATURE WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE LITERARY GENRE OF EPIC. PHILOLOGICAL AND LINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF SOME OF THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE TEXTS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED IN TWO PATHS: LITERARY (25 H) AND HISTORICAL-LINGUISTIC (20 H).
