THE TEACHING HAS THE OBJECTIVE OF UNDERSTANDING THE PROCESS OF TRANSFORMATION OF EUROPE INTO A SET OF INDEPENDENT STATES FOLLOWING THE SPREAD OF NATIONAL IDEOLOGIES IN THE LONG NINETEENTH CENTURY WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO ITALY. THE STUDENT WILL KNOW BOTH THE POLITICAL-INSTITUTIONAL CHARACTERS OF THE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES AND THE SOCIAL-CULTURAL CHARACTERS OF THEIR RESPECTIVE LEADING CLASSES UP TO THE FIRST WORLD CONFLICT, AND THE HISTORIOGRAPHY ON THE TOPIC, ACQUIRING METHODS OF RECONSTRUCTION AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS RELATING TO THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF THE ENTIRE PER IODE CONSIDERED. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO DISTINGUISH THE DIFFERENT WAYS AND DIFFERENT FORMS OF CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONAL STATES IN NINETEENTH CENTURY EUROPE IN RELATION TO THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM AND THE INTERNAL FRAMEWORK OF EACH OF THEM WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO ITALY. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO FORMULATE CRITICAL JUDGMENTS ON THE DIPLOMATIC AND POLITICAL DYNAMICS THAT CHARACTERIZE THE BIRTH AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE NATION-STATE IN ITALY AND TO ASSESS THEIR HISTORICAL IMPORT IN RELATION TO THE SOUTH. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE COMPARATIVE ANALYSES OF THE MAIN MODELS OF STATE AND NATION-BUILDING THAT HISTORIOGRAPHY HAS PROVIDED FOR THE STUDY OF NINETEENTH-CENTURY EUROPE. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO BOTH FIND THE BIBLIOGRAPHY AND ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTATION ON THE TOPIC AND TO START SCIENTIFIC OR PUBLIC RESEARCH ACTIVITIES, USING HISTORICAL SOURCES AND THE MOST RECENT LITERATURE. |

THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO FRONTAL LESSONS (40 HOURS). THE FRONTAL LESSONS WILL ALLOW THE STUDENT TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE RELATING TO THE DIFFERENT WAYS AND DIFFERENT FORMS OF CONSTRUCTION OF NATIONAL STATES IN NINETEENTH CENTURY EUROPE IN RELATION TO THE INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM AND THE INTERNAL FRAMEWORK OF EACH OF THEM WITH SPECIAL REGARD TO ITALY, THROUGH THE MOST RECENT METHODS OF RECONSTRUCTION AND CRITICAL ANALYSIS CONCERNING THE DIFFERENT PHASES OF THE PERIOD CONSIDERED. |

THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A FINAL ORAL EXAM AIMED AT VERIFYING THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE PROCESS OF TRANSFORMATION OF EUROPE INTO A SET OF INDEPENDENT STATES IN THE LONG NINETEENTH CENTURY WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO ITALY AS WELL AS HIS ABILITY TO DEVELOP CRITICAL JUDGMENTS ON THE DIPLOMATIC AND POLITICAL DYNAMICS THAT CHARACTERIZE THE STATE AND NATION-BUILDING MODEL OF THE COUNTRY AS WELL AS ASSESSING ITS HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE IN RELATION TO THE SOUTH. AT LEAST THREE QUESTIONS WILL BE FORMULATED TO ASSESS SUCH KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY. THE MARK (MIN 18, MAX 30 WITH POSSIBLE HONORS) IS DETERMINED BY THE LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING DIMENSIONS OF THE ORAL EXPOSURE: MASTERY OF THE CONTENTS, APPROPRIATENESS OF HISTORICAL REFERENCES, CLARITY OF THE ARGUMENTATION, DOMINATION OF THE MAIN HISTORIOGRAPHICAL INTERPRETATIONS. |
