Objectives
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES AND SKILLS TO BE ACQUIRED.
ACQUIRE THE THEORETICAL FOUNDAMENTALS OF THE ANALYSIS OF THE MAIN STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS IN TECHNICAL PRACTICE.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING SKILLS.
TO EXPAND THE KNOWLEDGE ALREADY ACQUIRED WITH REGARD TO BEAM SYSTEMS FOR A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS. ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE IN RELATION TO THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD.
ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING.
ACQUIRE A METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH FOR: THE RESOLUTION OF STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS WITH THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT.
TO DEVELOP A CRITICAL SENSE AIMED AT IDENTIFYING THE MOST SUITABLE FEATURES OF A FEM MODEL IN RELATION TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIALS, THE GEOMETRY AND THE TYPE OF PROBLEM EXAMINED.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS.
REFINEMENT OF TECHNICAL LANGUAGE.
ABILITY TO LEARN.
ABILITY TO LEARN FURTHER STRATEGIES FOR MODELING BEHIND THOSE PRESENTED DURING THE COURSE. ABILITY TO USE FINITE ELEMENT SOFTWARE DIFFERENT FROM THOSE PROPOSED.
Prerequisites
THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CONTINUUM MECHANICS, THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY, THE BEAM THEORY, THE ELASTOSTATIC PROBLEM IS REQUIRED.
Contents
THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD: DISPACEMENT-BASED FORMULATION. MECHANICAL MODEL. REFERENCE SYSTEM AND ASSEMBLING. PRINCIPLE OF VIRTUAL DISPALCEMENTS: THE DISCRETE EQUATIONS OF BALANCE. BOUNDARY CONDITIONS. APPLICATIONS OF THE METHOD TO ONE-DIMENSIONAL STRUCTURAL MODELS. EXAMPLES. CONVERGENCE CRITERIA. ISOPARAMETRIC FINITE ELEMENTS. NUMERICAL TECHNIQUES FOR SOLVING ALGEBRIC SYSTEMS. APPLICATIONS AND COMPARISONS.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDE THEORETHICAL LECTURES AND APPLICATIONS BY USING FEM CODES.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL TEST CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN CLASSWORK AND AN ORAL INTERVIEW.
THE WRITTEN TEST IS CONCERNED WITH THE FEM ANALYSIS OF A PLANE FRAMED SYSTEMS.
THE ORAL INTERVIEW COVERS THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS OF THE DIFFERENT CLASS MODULES.
