Objectives
THE MAIN PURPOSE OF THIS COURSE IS TO GIVE A GENERAL AND COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF THE LABOUR MARKET FUNCTIONING, BOTH FROM THE INDIVIDUAL PERSPECTIVE AND IN THE INSTITUTIONAL FRAMEWORK (KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING). STUDENTS WILL LEARN TO APPLY ECONOMIC METHODOLOGY TO LABOUR MARKET PROBLEMS (APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING) AND TO ASSES IN A CRITICAL WAY THE VALIDITY OF ASSUMPTIONS AND SOLUTIONS PROPOSED . STUDENTS WILL LEARN HOW TO EFFECTIVELY ORGANIZE IDEAS BOTH IN WRITTEN AND ORAL FORM, WITH THE HELP OF PRESENTATION OF SHORT REPORTS ON SPECIFIC ISSUES DURING THE COURSE . THIS COURSE WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO DECIDE ON RELEVANT INFORMATION TO UNDERSTAND LABOUR MARKET AND POLICY IMPLICATIONS .

INTRODUCTION TO THE LABOUR MARKET. LABOUR SUPPLY AND SUPPLY SIDE POLICIES. LABOUR DEMAND. COMPETITIVE AND NON-COMPETITIVE LABOUR MARKET EQUILIBRIUM. MIGRATION. HUMAN CAPITAL. TRADE UNIONS AND COLLECTIVE BARGAINING.

STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE BETWEEN TWO ALTERNATIVE EXAMINATION METHODS:
1° METHOD
A WRITTEN TEST AND PROJECT WORK. EACH OF THE TWO STAGES CAN BE PASSED WITH A MINIMUM OF 18/30. THE FINAL GRADE IS SIMPLY THE AVERAGE OF THE TWO PARTIAL RESULTS.
THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION, LASTING APPROXIMATELY TWO HOUR AND HALF, IS AIMED AT DETERMINING IN A CLEAR AND UNAMBIGUOUS MANNER THE STUDENTS’ KNOWLEDGE AND THE ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND BOTH THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL CONTENTS AS TARGETED IN THE PROGRAMME. FINALLY, IT VERIFIES HOW THE STUDENTS CAN APPLY THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE. THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF 5 OPEN QUESTIONS.

THE PROJECT WORK AIMS TO VERIFY HOW STUDENTS APPLY THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE TO CASE STUDIES AND CONSISTS IN A WRITTEN SHORT ESSAY ON AN AGREED ISSUE AND AN ORAL PRESENTATION TO THE CLASSROOM.

2° METHOD
ORAL EXAMINATION WITH AN INTERVIEW AIMED AT TESTING STUDENTS’ KNOWLEGE AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND ACHIEVED, AND , AT THE SAME TIME, THE EXPERTISE IN THE FIELD.
