Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING THE BASIC TOOLS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF MECHANICAL SYSTEMS AND MACHINES. IN ADDITION THE COURSE PROVIDE AN INTRODUCTION TO METHODS FOR DESIGNING OF CONTROL LAWS OF MECHANICAL SYSTEMS.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS, GEOMETRY, PHYSICS AND RATIONAL MECHANICS.

THE COURSE LASTS 120 HOURS, 60 OF THEORY AND 60 EXERCISES

PRELIMINARY CONCEPTS (2 HOURS):MACHINES AND MECHANISMS. KINEMATIC PAIRS. DEGREES OF FREEDOM.
KINEMATICS (10 ORE): MATRIX FORMULATION ON KINEMATICS OF RIGID BODIES.
MECHANISMS KINEMATCS (10 HOURS): CONCEPT OF LOOP AND MECHANISM CLASSIFICATION (PARALLEL, SERIAL AND HYBRID). KINEMATIC ANALYSIS. FOUR-BAR LINKAGE. SLIDER-CRANK LINKAGE. UNIVERSAL JOINT.
GEARS (10 HOURS): SPUR GEARS: PROPERTIES OF THE INVOLUTE, VELOCITY RATIO, GEAR MEASUREMENTS. HELICAL GEARS. BEVEL GEARS. WORM GEARS.
GEAR TRAINS (7 HOURS): ORDINARY GEAR TRAINS. PLANETARY GEAR TRAINS. DIFFERENTIAL GEAR SYSTEMS.
CAM MECHANISMS (3 HOURS): LAW OF MOTION. DETERMINATION OF THE CAM PROFILE. ELEMENTARY LAWS OF MOTION.

FORCES APPLIED TO THE MACHINES (5 HOURS): CLASSIFICATION OF FORCE SYSTEMS. FRICTION WORK. DEFINITION OF EFFICIENCY. EFFICIENCY OF IN-SERIES AND IN-PARALLEL MACHINES. RETROGRADE MOTION. REACTION FORCES IN THE IDEAL KINEMATIC PAIRS.
DYNAMICS (25 HOURS): MATRIX FORMULATION ON DYNAMICS OF RIGID BODIES. GYROSCOPIC EFFECTS ON ROTORS. DYNAMICS OF GYROSCOPES.

VIBRATIONS OF SINGLE DEGREE OF FREEDOM SYSTEMS (5 HOURS): FREE VIBRATIONS. DAMPING INFLUENCE ON MECHANICAL VIBRATIONS - DRY, VISCOUS AND HYSTERIC. FORCED VIBRATIONS.

VIBRATIONS OF TWO DEGREE OF FREEDOM SYSTEMS (10 HOURS): FREE VIBRATIONS. FORCED VIBRATIONS. PASSIVE AND ACTIVE ISOLATION VIBRATIONS.

CONTROLLO DEI SISTEMI MECCANICI (20 HOURS): LEGGI DI CONTROLLO PID. PROGETTO DI LEGGI DI CONTROLLO PER UN CART PENDULUM. SVILUPPO DI UN SISTEMA DI CONTROLLO BASATO SU MICRO-CONTROLLORE.

TRIBOLOGY (5 HOURS): FRICTION AND WEAR IN SLIDING AND ROLLING CONTACTS. FRICTION IN KINEMATIC PAIRS. DISTRIBUTION OF CONTACT PRESSURES (CLUTCHES, BRAKES). ROLLER BEARINGS.
LUBRICATION (8 HOURS): VISCOSITÀ E CARATTERISTICHE DEI LUBRIFICANTI. TEORIA ELEMENTARE DELLA LUBRIFICAZIONE FLUIDODINAMICA. APPLICAZIONI TECNICHE. COPPIA ROTOIDALE LUBRIFICATA. DIMENSIONAMENTO DI UN CUSCINETTO PORTANTE. CENNI SULLA LUBRIFICAZIONE FLUIDOSTATICA.
LUBRICANT VISCOSITY AND PROPERTIES. ELEMENTARY THEORY OF HYDRODYNAMIC LUBRICATION. JOURNAL BEARINGS. OVERVIEW ON HYDROSTATIC AND DRY LUBRICATION.
Teaching Methods
DURING THE COURSE, THE SUBJECTS ARE ADDRESSED BOTH FROM A THEORETICAL AND FROM A PRACTICAL POINT OF VIEW. FOR EACH TOPIC, A NUMBER OF EXERCISES, THE SOLUTION IS PARTLY SHOWN IN CLASS AND PARTLY LEFT TO THE STUDENT AS A TOOL FOR SELF-TRAINING.
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSIST OF A WRITTEN AND ORAL TEST. THE ORAL TEST AIMS AT VERIFYING, THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPICS DEVELOPED DURING THE COURSE, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY OF THE STUDENT IN EXPOSING IN CLEAR WAY THE TECHNOLOGICAL ISSUES.
