Objectives
THE COURSE IS AIMED AT THE ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE MAIN PATHWAYS OF THE PLANT SECONDARY METABOLISM, OF THE CHEMICAL FEATURES AND THE BIOSYNTHESIS OF THE MAIN CLASSES OF PLANT SECONDARY METABOLITES, IN PARTICULAR OF BIOACTIVE PRINCIPLES OF PHARMACEUTICAL, NUTRACEUTICAL AND COSMETIC INTEREST. FURTHER AIMS ARE THE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE CLASSIFICATION OF HERBAL DRUGS, OF THEIR BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY AND OF THEIR BIOACTIVE PRINCIPLES. THE STUDENT, ON THE BASIS OF THE ACQUIRED SKILLS, WILL BE ABLE TO ELABORATE CRITERIA TO RECOGNIZE THE HERBAL DRUGS AND TO EVALUATE AND ADDRESS PROBLEMS RELATED TO THEIR USE.

PHARMACOGNOSY
PLANT NOMENCLATURE AND TAXONOMY. PLANTS AND THEIR MORPHOLOGY. ORGANIZED AND NOT ORGANIZED HERBAL DRUGS. CONSERVATION AND EXTRACTION METHODS OF HERBAL DRUGS (8 H). MAIN FEATURES OF HERBAL DRUGS AND PREPARATIONS.
FOR EACH HERBAL DRUG: BOTANICAL SOURCE, MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC FEATURES, QUALI-QUANTITATIVE CHEMICAL PROFILE, BIOACTIVE CONSTITUENTS, BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY, THERAPEUTIC USES. HERBAL DRUGS EMPLOYED FOR THEIR CONTENT IN CARBOHYDRATES (2 H); HERBAL DRUGS EMPLOYED FOR THEIR CONTENT IN LIPIDS (4 H); HERBAL DRUGS CONTAINING AROMATIC COMPOUNDS (PHENOLS, TANNINS, FLAVONOIDS, COUMARINS, LIGNANS, ANTRAQUINONES) (4 H)
HERBAL DRUGS EMPLOYED FOR THEIR CONTENT IN TERPENOIDS AND STEROIDS (ESSENTIAL OILS, RESINS AND GUMS, SAPONINS, CARDIAC GLYCOSIDES) (10 H); HERBAL DRUGS EMPLOYED FOR THEIR CONTENT IN ALKALOIDS (ALKALOIDS DERIVED FROM ORNITHINE, LYSINE, PHENYLALANINE, TYROSINE AND TRYPTOPHAN) (12H).

PHYTOCHEMISTRY
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY PLANT METABOLISM (2H). PLANT METABOLIC PATHWAYS. STRUCTURES, PROPERTIES AND CLASSIFICATION OF SECONDARY METABOLITES (2 H). EXTRACTION AND ISOLATION METHODS OF SECONDARY METABOLITES (3 H). PLANT CARBOHYDRATES (2H). PLANT LIPIDS ( 2H).
SHIKIMIC ACID PATHWAY: PHENOLIC ACIDS, GALLIC ACID, TANNINS, COUMARINS, LIGNANS, LIGNIN (6 H).
ACETATE PATHWAY: ANTRAQUINONES (2 H).
MIXED BIOGENESIS: FLAVONOIDS (2 H).
MEVALONATE PATHWAY: TERPENOIDS AND DERIVATIVES (ESSENTIAL OILS, RESINS AND GUMS, SAPONINS, CARDIAC GLYCOSIDES) (8 H).
ALKALOIDS: CLASSIFICATION (2 H), ALKALOIDS DERIVING FROM ORNITINE (2 H), LYSINE (2 H), PHENYLALANINE AND TYROSINE (2 H), TRYPTOPHAN (2 H), ALKALOIDS DERIVING FROM A MIXED PATHWAY (1 H).

Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN AND ORAL TEST, TO BE SUSTAINED IN THE SAME EXAM SESSION. THE RATING IS X/30. TO PASS THE WRITTEN TEST WITH A SCORE OF 18/30 IS MANDATORY TO ACCESS TO THE ORAL TEST AND REACH THE FINAL GRADE. THE WRITTEN TEST TAKES TWO HOURS AND CONSISTS OF OPEN QUESTIONS ON THE MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES. EACH QUESTION IS ADDRESSED TO VERIFY KNOWLEDGES OF BOTH PHARMACOGNOSY AND PHYTOCHEMISTRY.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ASKED TO DISCUSS THE MAIN TOPICS OF THE COURSE, TRYING TO DEMONSTRATE CRITICAL THOUGHT AND AWARENESS OF THE SUBJECTS OF THE FIELD OF STUDY.
