Objectives
ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE ON THE PLANT ORIGIN, MORPHOLOGY, CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY AND USE OF HERBAL DRUGS AND DERIVED PREPARATIONS. THE STUDENT, ON THE BASIS OF THE ACQUIRED SKILLS, WILL BE ABLE TO ELABORATE CRITERIA TO RECOGNIZE AND USE THE HERBAL DRUGS.
ACQUISION OF KNOWLEDGE ON PLANT METABOLISM, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO PLANT SECONDARY METABOLITES. THE STUDENT, ON THE BASIS OF THE ACQUIRED SKILLS, WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND CORRELATE THE MAIN CLASSES OF NATURAL PRODUCTS.

DEFINITION OF HERBAL DRUG AND ACTIVE PRINCIPLE; PLANT NOMENCLATURE AND TAXONOMY (2 H). ORGANIZED AND NOT ORGANIZED HERBAL DRUGS (4 H). EXTRACTIVE METHODS AND PLANT EXTRACTS WITH PRACTICAL ACTIVITIES (6 H). CONSERVATION, STABILITY AND VARIABILITY OF HERBAL DRUGS AND DERIVED PREPARATIONS. ELEMENTS OF QUALITY CONTROL (4 H). PRIMARY AND SECONDARY METABOLITES (2 H).
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE PRIMARY METABOLISM AND THE MAIN PATHWAYS OF SECONDARY METABOLISM, DEFINITION AND SYSTEMATICS OF SECONDARY METABOLITES (4H). FOR EACH HERBAL DRUG: BOTANICAL SOURCE, MACROSCOPIC AND MICROSCOPIC CHARACTERS, QUALI-QUANTITATIVE CHEMICAL PROFILE, BIOACTIVE CONSTITUENTS, BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF HERBAL DRUGS AND ACTIVE PRINCPLES. BIOSYNTHETIC PATHWAY OF CARBOHYDRATES: MONOSACCARIDES, DISACCHARIDES, POLISACCHARIDES, STARCH. HERBAL DRUGS EMPLOYED FOR THEIR CONTENT IN CARBOHYDRATES (2 H). LIPIDS AND RELATIVE HERBAL DRUGS (1 H). RESINS AND BALMS (1H). BIOSYNTHETIC PATHWAY OF SHIKIMATE. (PHENOLS, POLYPHENOLS, PHENYLPROPANOIDS, COUMARINS, LIGNANS) AND RELATIVE DRUGS (8 H). BIOSYNTHETIC PATHWAY OF ACETATE (ANTRAQUINONES AND FLAVONOIDS) (4H). ANTRAQUINONE DRUGS (2H). BIOSYNTHETIC PATHWAY OF MEVALONATE (2H). THE ROLE OF TERPENOIDS IN PLANT DEFENSE. TERPENOIDS: LOCALIZATION, BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY. STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF MONOTERPENES, IRIDOIDS, SESQUITERPENES, DITERPENES (6 H). CHEMICAL FEATURES OF TRITERPENES, STEROIDS, SAPONINS AND RELATIVE DRUGS (6 H). CARDIAC GLYCOSIDES AND RELATIVE DRUGS (4 H). ALKALOIDS CLASSIFICATION (2 H). BASIC PRINCIPLES OF THE ALKALOIDS BIOSYNTHESIS: ALKALOIDS DERIVING FROM ORNITHINE, LISINE, PHENYLALANINE, TYROSINE, AND TRYPTOPHAN; DRUGS USED FOR THEIR ALKALOID CONTENT (12 H).

Verification of learning
THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN AND ORAL TEST, TO BE SUSTEINED IN THE SAME EXAM SESSION. THE RATING IS X/30. PASS THE WRITTEN TEST WITH A SCORE OF 18/30, IT IS MANDATORY TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THE ORAL TEST, AND REACH THE FINAL GRADE. THE WRITTEN TEST TAKES TWO HOURS AND CONSISTS OF OPEN QUESTIONS ON THE MAIN LEARNING OUTCOMES OF PHARMACOGNOSY AND PHYTOCHEMISTRY.
THE STUDENT WILL BE ASKED TO DISCUSS THE MAIN TOPICS OF THE COURSE, TRYING TO DEMONSTRATE CRITICAL THOUGHT AND AWARENESS OF THE SUBJECTS OF THE FIELD OF STUDY.
