KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE PURPOSE OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE BASIC INFORMATION ON THE USE OF THE SCANNING PROBE MICROSCOPY FOR LOCAL PHYSICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF SURFACES AND NANOSTRUCTURES. BY ATTENDING THE COURSE, STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE NEEDED TO FULLY UNDERSTAND HOW SPM WORKS, THE MAIN SPM TECHNIQUES FOR LOCAL ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC CHARACTERIZATION OF SURFACES AND NANOSTRUCTURES, THE PLANNING AND EXECUTION OF EXPERIMENTS BASED ON SPM. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED TO TEACH KEY CONCEPTS, BOTH THEORETICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL, WHICH ALLOW A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PRINCIPLES UNDERLYING THE SCANNING PROBE EXPERIMENTS AND THE WAY SPM CAN BE USED FOR SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS IN THE FIELDS OF MATERIAL PHYSICS AND NANOTECHNOLOGY . |
Prerequisites | |
---|---|
THE STUDENT MUST HAVE SOME BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LABORATORY OF CLASSICAL PHYSICS, NUMERICAL METHODS AND OF USING OF COMPUTERS . |

THE COURSE WILL BE PERFORMED IN THE SPNM LABORATORY OF PHYSICS DEPARTMENT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SALERNO. THE STUDENTS WILL BE TRAINED TO DIRECTLY MAKE USE OF THE SPM LABORATORY EQUIPMENTS, PERFORMING DIFFERENT EXPERIMENTS BASED ON THE SPM TECHNIQUES , INVESTIGATING ON A PREFERRED MATERIAL, CHOOSEN AND MOTIVATED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE COURSE, IN RESPECT WITH ITS PHYSICAL PROPERTIES. THE SPM EQUIPMENTS WILL BE DIRECTLY USED BY STUDENTS. THE ANALYSIS OF DATA ACQUIRED WILL BE PERFORMED THROUGH SPECIFIC ANALYSIS SOFTWARES. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE EXAMINATION IS PERFORMED THROUGH A LABORATORY EXPERIMENT, WITH A WRITTEN AND ORAL DISSERTATION. THE FINAL SCORE WILL BE BASED ON THE AVERAGE SCORE OF THE WRITTEN AND ORAL DISCUSSION OTHER THAN THE REPORT. |
