Teaching Methods
THE TOPIC OF CLASSROOM LECTURES WILL FOCUS ON PHYSICS AT THE NANOSCALE AND DESCRIPTION OF PRESENT AND FUTURE APPLICATIONS IN NANOTECHNOLOGY FIELD; IN THIS SENSE, THE COURSE HAS A THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL IMPRINT, PURSUED THROUGH THE EXEMPLIFICATION OF CASES.
Verification of learning
TYPE OF EXAM: ORAL

HOW TO VERIFY LEARNING: ORAL PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION OF A SELECTED TOPIC AMONG THOSE CONSIDERED DURING THE COURSE.

EVALUATION: FINAL VOTE

- THE ORAL TEST WILL BE DIVIDED AS FOLLOWS: THE TEACHER ASSIGNS TO THE STUDENTS PERSONALIZED TOPICS ON WHICH THEY WILL BE ASKED TO GIVE AN EXTENDED PRESENTATION IN FRONT OF THE COMMITTEE, AFTER A PROCESSING TIME OF 3 HOURS. THE ORAL EXHIBITION CAN BE ASSISTED BY THE USE OF BLACKBOARD, MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATION, OR THROUGH PRINTED MATTER AND HAND-WRITTEN TEXTS. THE STUDENT WILL BE ASKED TO DISCUSS SOME PHYSICAL PROPERTIES CHARACTERISTICS OF THE REDUCTION TO NANOMETRIC SIZE, FOR EXAMPLE: QUANTUM CONSEQUENCES OF DIMENSIONAL CONFINEMENT AT THE NANOSCALE, OPTICAL PROPERTIES IN SEMICONDUCTOR OR METALLIC NANOPARTICLES, MAGNETISM AT THE NANOSCALE, PHYSICAL INVESTIGATION TECHNIQUES IN NANOTECHNOLOGY.

THE EVALUATION OF THE TESTS TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE ABILITY TO PRESENT IN A CLEAR AND CONCISE WAY THE OBJECTIVES, THE PROCEDURE AND THE RESULTS OF THE ASSIGNED TOPIC, AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO PROPOSE POSSIBLE FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS, SUCH AS APPLICATIONS IN THE FIELD OF NANOTECHNOLOGY INHERENT TO THE TOPIC ASSIGNED BY THE TEACHER.
THE FINAL VOTE WILL BE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS WITH POSSIBLE PRAISE.
THE MINIMUM ASSESSMENT LEVEL (18/30) IS GIVEN WHEN THE STUDENT SHOWS UNCERTAINTIES AND HAS A LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF THE ASSIGNED TOPIC.
THE MINIMUM LEVEL (30/30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A DEEP AND COMPLETE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TOPIC DEALT WITH IN HIS PRESENTATION OF THE EXAMINATION TEST, IS ABLE TO DISCUSS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND SIGNIFICANT SCIENTIFIC ASPECTS AND CONSEQUENCES AND SHOWS A REMARKABLE ABILITY TO CONNECT AND EXPOSE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF NANOSCIENCES BETWEEN THEM.
PRAISE IS GIVEN WHEN THE CANDIDATE DEMONSTRATES A SIGNIFICANT MASTERY OF THEORETICAL AND OPERATIONAL KNOWLEDGE AND SHOWS THAT HE IS ABLE TO PRESENT THE TOPICS USING SPECIALIZED LANGUAGE AND COMPETENCES EVEN IN CONTEXTS OTHER THAN THOSE PROPOSED BY THE TEACHER.

More Information
THE SUBJECT OF THIS TEACHING DEALS WITH DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF NANOSCIENCES (NS). AS A MATTER OF FACT NS IS A MULTIDISCIPLINARY SCIENCE COLLECTING SEVERAL CONTRIBUTIONS COMING FROM VARIOUS SCIENTIFIC DISCIPLINE SUCH AS PHYSICS, ENGINEERING, CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY. DURING THIS CLASS, THE INTERDISCIPLINARITY OF NS WILL BE CONSIDERED AND DISCUSSED, EVEN DO PHYSICS AT THE NANOSCALE WILL BE THE MAIN SCIENTIFIC ROUTE. STUDENTS WILL BE GUIDED BY A QUESTION: HOW AND WHY THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS DIFFER WHEN THEY ARE NANO-SIZED?

THIS NS TEACHING WILL DEAL WITH DIFFERENT TOPICS, THAT BELONG TO BOTH CLASSICAL AND QUANTUM PHYSICS. NOVEL AND UNESPECTED PHYSICAL PHENOMENA AT THE NANOSCALE WILL BE DISCUSSED TOGETHER WITH THE LAWS GOVERNING THEM. THE POSSIBILITY OF USING NOVEL PHISICAL PHENOMENA IN NANO-TECHNOLOGY WILL BE CLARIFIED, EMPHASIZING MODERN APPLICATIONS AND RESEARCH FRONTIERS.
BY CONSIDERING FABRICATION TECHNIQUES FOR REALIZING NANOSTRUCTURES, NANOMETROLOGICAL TECHNIQUES FOR MEASURING THEIR PHYSICAL PROPERTIES, THIS NS CLASS WILL PROVIDE A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF BOTH NANOSCIENCE AND NANOTECNOLOGY .
AMONG THE INTERDISCIPLINARY ASPECTS, THE FABRICATION USING BOTTOM-UP AND TOP-DOWN APPROACH WILL BE CONSIDERED AS WELL AS CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONALIZATIONS OF NANO PARTICLES AND NANOPROBES.
MOREOVER AS A CONSEQUENCE OF THE MULTIDISCIPLINARY CHARACTERISTIC OF NS, DURING ITS STUDY, THE USE OF DIFFERENT BIBLIOGRAPHIC SOURCES RATHER THAN OF A SINGLE MAIN ONE IS MANDATORY. THE THREE PROPOSED TEXTBOOKS ARE COVERING THE WHOLE OF CONCEPTS PRESENTED BY THE TEACHER DURING THE LECTURES. THE COURSE DOES NOT REQUIRE SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMISTRY OR BIOLOGY, BUT REQUIRES BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF CLASSICAL AND QUANTUM PHYSICS, POSSIBLY OF THE SOLID STATE PHYSICS. A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE (WRITTEN) IS MANDATORY.
FINALLY THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE A MORE THAN EXHAUSTIVE KNOWLEDGE OF NANOSCIENCES, WILL BE ABLE TO MASTER THE NS CONCEPTS ALONG ANY READING OF SCIENTIFIC PAPERS OR HEARING SCIENTIFIC DEBATES, HAVING ACQUIRED THE BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN NS TOPICS.
STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO HAVE A CONFRONTATION WITH THE TEACHER, FAVOURING A DIALECTICAL LEARNING OF THE CONTENTS PRESENTED DURING THE LECTURES.
STUDENTS AT THE VERY END OF THE COURSE WILL BE GUIDED ON A VISIT THROUGH LABORATORIES TO DESCRIBE THE EQUIPMENT FOR NANOSCIENCE RESEARCH PRESENT WITHIN THE PHYSICS DEPARTMENT OF UNIVERSITY OF SALERNO.
