Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH FURTHER OPPORTUNITIES TO ENRICH THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE, TO DEVELOP A MORE IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE LITERARY PHENOMENA AND OF THE SOCIOCULTURAL EXPERIENCES RELATED TO THEM, TO REFINE THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIFFERENT METHODOLOGICAL APPROACHES TO THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS AND TO IMPROVE THEIR CRITICAL AWARENESS. STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN VARIOUS PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS.
Prerequisites
GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE. STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FOLLOWING EXAMS: ENGLISH LANGUAGE IV AND ENGLISH LITERATURE IV
Contents
THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE REPRESENTATION OF GENDER AND SEXUALITY IN BRITISH CULTURE AND LITERATURE IN THE LATE-VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN PERIOD. AT THE FIN DE SIÈCLE THE RISE OF A NEW SCIENCE, SEXOLOGY, AND THE EMERGENCE OF NEW SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ICONS, SUCH AS THE NEW WOMAN AND THE MALE AESTHETE, REDEFINED THE MEANINGS OF FEMININITY AND MASCULINITY AND TESTIFIED TO A GENERAL QUESTIONING OF TRADITIONAL GENDER BOUNDARIES AND IDENTITIES RESULTING IN CONFLICTING DISCOURSES OF SEXUAL POLITICS. AMONG THE TOPICS DISCUSSED WILL BE: 1) THE WOMAN QUESTION AND “THE NEW WOMAN”; 2) SEXOLOGY AND THE INVENTION OF SEXUAL TYPES; 3) MONSTROUS SEXUALITY: SALOME; 4) DANDIES, MALE AESTHETES, HOMOSEXUALS: FROM WILDE TO FORSTER.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES, SEMINARS. STUDENTS WILL BE ENCOURAGED TO GIVE PRESENTATIONS OR WRITE SHORT ESSAYS ON TOPICS OF THEIR OWN CHOICE RELATED TO THE COURSE.
Verification of learning
FINAL ORAL EXAM IN ENGLISH. STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO DISCUSS THE PRIMARY TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE READING LIST USING THE CRITICAL MATERIAL RELATED TO THE TEXTS. SHORT ESSAYS WILL BE ASSESSED DURING THE COURSE.
