Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE KNOWLEDGE OF SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE. BY THE END OF THE COURSE STUDENTS WILL IMPROVE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEXTS AND CONTEXTS, AND WILL BE ABLE AUTONOMOUSLY TO RE-ELABORATE THE MATERIAL THEY HAVE STUDIED ALSO IN ENGLISH. THEY WILL ALSO BE CONFIDENT ABOUT THEIR USE OF CRITICAL APPROACHES TO TEXTS. ADDITIONALLY, THEY WILL DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN VARIOUS PROFESSIONAL CONTEXTS.

THE COURSE AIMS TO STUDY THE NOVEL AS THE MOST RELEVANT EXPRESSION OF BRITISH LITERARY CULTURE IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES. AMONG THE TOPICS DISCUSSED WILL BE: THE RISE OF THE NEW GENRE, ITS EVOLUTION AND ITS ANTI-MODELS; GOTHIC FICION AND THE NOVEL VS ROMANCE DEBATE; VICTORIAN REALISTIC FICTION
