Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE:
-KNOWLEDGE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS OF 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE, FOCUSING IN PARTICULAR ON THE NOVEL;
-- BASIC METHODOLOGIES OF ANALYSIS OF THE LITERARY TEXT.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO:
-ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY CULTURAL CONTEXT AND LITERARY WORKS;
-UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEXT AND CONTEXT;
-ACQUIRE THE BASIC TOOLS OF NARRATOLOGICAL AND TEXTUAL ANALYSIS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-CONTEXTUALISE THE LITERARY TEXT AND RELATE IT TO OTHER TEXTS BELONGING TO THE SAME CULTURAL CONTEXT;
-ANALYSE THE FORM AND THE STYLE OF THE LITERARY TEXT;
-PROVIDE A GENERALE OUTLINE OF THE LITERATURE AND CULTURE OF THE PERIOD;

BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH.

THE COURSE CONCENTRATES UPON THE STUDY OF THE NOVEL AS THE MOST SIGNIFICATIVE EXPRESSION OF ENGLISH LITERARY CULTURE IN THE 19TH CENTURY. AFTER DISCUSSING THE RISE OF THE NOVEL AND ITS RELATION TO INDIVIDUALISM, THE COURSE WILL FOCUS ON THE EVOLUTION OF THE GENRE IN THE VICTORIAN AGE. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE MULTIPLICITY OF FORMS CHARACTERIZING VICTORIAN NARRATIVE FICION, IN WHICH MIMETIC AND REALISTIC CONVENTIONS COEXISTED WITH FANTASTIC AND GOTHIC MODELS.
