Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE:
-KNOWLEDGE OF SOME OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ASPECTS OF 20TH CENTURY ENGLISH LITERATURE AND CULTURE THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF LITERARY TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT GENRES;
- METHODOLOGIES OF ANALYSIS OF THE LITERARY TEXT.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO:
-ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF 20TH CENTURY CULTURAL CONTEXT AND LITERARY WORKS;
-UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TEXT AND CONTEXT;
- ACQUIRE THE TOOLS OF TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-CONTEXTUALISE THE LITERARY TEXT AND RELATE IT TO OTHER TEXTS BELONGING TO THE SAME CULTURAL CONTEXT;
-ANALYSE THE FORM AND STYLE OF THE LITERARY TEXT;
-COMPARE THE 20TH CENTURY TEXT WITH ITS 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY ANTECEDENTS, BOTH IN FORM AND CONTENT;
-PROVIDE A GENERAL OUTLINE OF THE LITERATURE AND CULTURE OF THE PERIOD;
- DEVELOP A CRITICAL DISCOURSE USING THE LANGUAGE OF THE DISCIPLINE BOTH IN ITALIAN AND IN ENGLISH.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO:
-FORMULATE HYPOTHESES ON THE LITERARY TEXT AUTONOMOUSLY;
-COMPARE IT WITH OTHER TEXTS;
-SELECT AND RETAIN RELEVANT INFORMATION;
-SELECT BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOLS IN ORDER TO INVESTIGATE TEXTS BELONGING TO THE SAME AND/OR DIFFERENT CULTURAL CONTEXTS

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO EXPOSE THE NOTIONS ACQUIRED AND THEIR PERSONAL THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS ON THE SUBJECT BOTH IN ITALIAN AND IN ENGLISH.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UPDATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE BY RESORTING TO BIBLIOGRAPHICAL TOOL WHICH WILL ENABLE THEM TO CARRY OUT FURTHER RESEARCH.

STUDENTS MUST HAVE PASSED THE FIRST-YEAR ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND ENGLISH LITERATURE EXAMS.

THE COURSE AIMS TO STUDY TWENTIETH CENTURY BRITISH ARTISTIC AND LITERARY AVANT-GARDE THROUGH THE ANALYSIS OF SIGNIFICANT LITERARY TEXTS BELONGING TO DIFFERENT GENRES (POETRY, NOVEL, ESSAY, SHOT STORY).

F) T.S. ELIOT'S POETRY (8 HOURS)
G) LITERARY IMPRESSIONISM AND THE THEORY OF IMPERSONALITY: ELIOT AND FORD (8 HOURS)
H) V. WOOLF AND THE MODERNIST NOVEL: "TO THE LIGHTHOUSE", "MODERN FICTION" (10 HOURS)

Teaching Methods
LECTURES IN ITALIAN AND ENGLISH (54 HOURS). EXTRACTS FROM THE TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE READING LISTS WILL BE ANALYSED AND DISCUSSED IN CLASS. USE OF FILMIC MATERIAL RELATED TO THE THEMES OF THE COURSE.

STUDENTS WILL DEMONSTRATE TO BE ABLE TO: DISCUSS THE TEXTS AND THE THEMES OF THE COURSE; EXPRESS THEMSELVES CLEARLY AND FLUENTLY IN ITALIAN; READ AND UNDERSTAND CHOSEN PASSAGES IN ENGLISH FROM THE PRIMARY TEXTS INCLUDED IN THE READING LIST; RELATE AUTHORS AND TEXTS TO THEIR HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT; SELECT AND MEMORISE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DATA; USE ENGLISH TO COMMUNICATE BASIC CONCEPTS RELATED TO THE COURSE; AUTONOMOUSLY RE-ELABORATE THE MATERIAL THEY HAVE STUDIED.
