Objectives
COURSE OBJECTIVES: LEARNING GOALS AND SKILLS ACHIEVED
THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE FIELD OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND ITS FUNDAMENTALS.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND REAL ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS, ABILITY TO "THINK THROUGH" ON THE CONCEPTS OF ENVIRONMENT, POLLUTION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, BASED ON THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ECOLOGY AIMED AT UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACTS GENERATED BY HUMAN ACTIVITIES ON NATURAL SYSTEMS, KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAIN ASPECTS OF EACH ENVIRONMENTAL SECTOR.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
ABILITY TO SET UP A MASS BALANCE FOR NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL SYSTEMS, ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND USE MODELS FOR POLLUTION IN THE WATER AND THE ATMOSPHERIC SECTORS, KNOWLEDGE OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS
KNOWING HOW TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE MODELS TO DESCRIBE AND UNDERSTAND THE BEHAVIOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION AFFECTING DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL SECTORS AND BEING ABLE TO MAKE AN ASSESSMENT OF THE QUALITY LEVEL OF A SPECIFIC ENVIRONMENTAL SECTOR.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
LEARNING TO WORK IN SMALL GROUPS OF PEERS AND TO ORALLY PRESENT A TOPIC RELATED TO ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION AND/OR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY ASSESSMENT.
LEARNING SKILLS
KNOWING HOW TO APPLY GENERAL CONCEPTS TO PROBLEMS THAT DIFFER FROM THOSE DISCUSSED IN THE CLASSROOM, AND HOW TO DEEPEN KNOWLEDGE USING TEXTBOOKS AND RESOURCES BEYOND THE RECOMMENDED ONES.
Prerequisites
IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE ABOVE-MENTIONED GOALS, STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE PASSED THEIR FUNDAMENTAL MATHEMATICS, CHEMISTRY AND PHYSICS CLASSES.
Contents
ENVIRONMENT, POLLUTION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT:
INTRODUCTION TO THE CONCEPTS OF ENVIRONMENT, POLLUTION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, THE ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUE, THE DEMAND-DRIVEN MARKET, TOOLS TO PROMOTE AND IMPLEMENT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

ECOLOGY FUNDAMENTALS:
THE CONCEPT OF ECOLOGY, ECOSYSTEMS, FOOD CHAINS AND FOOD WEBS, ECOLOGICAL PYRAMIDS, PRODUCTIVITY AND TURNOVER TIME IN ECOSYSTEMS, NUTRIENTS, ELEMENTS AFFECTING BIOGROWTH, BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES, THE BIOGEOCHEMICAL CARBON CYCLE, THE BIOGEOCHEMICAL NITROGEN CYCLE, THE BIOGEOCHEMICAL PHOSPHORUS CYCLE, THE CONCEPT OF BIODIVERSITY, THE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT

THE ENVIRONMENTAL SECTORS:
MEASUREMENT UNITS, CONCENTRATION, FLOW RATES, CHEMICAL REACTION KINETICS AND BIOLOGICAL REACTIONS ZERO ORDER KINETICS, FIRST ORDER KINETICS AND SECOND ORDER KINETICS, MASS BALANCES, THE FUNDAMENTAL EQUATION OF MASS BALANCE, THE CONCEPTS OF "PROCESS" AND "TREATMENT", THE CONCEPT OF REMOVAL EFFICIENCY, COMPLETELY STIRRED TANK REACTOR (CSTR), PLUG FLOW REACTOR (PFR), THE IDEAL SEDIMENTATION TANK (ST), INTRODUCTION TO WATER AND WASTEWATER TREATMENT

WATER POLLUTION PHENOMENA:

WASTE MANAGEMENT:
WASTE PRODUCTION, CLASSIFICATION OF SOLID WASTE, MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT, THE CONCEPT OF REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE, TREATMENT OF MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES, CLASSROOM-BASED TESTS AND LABORATORY SESSIONS. STUDENTS ARE INVOLVED IN THE DISCUSSIONS WITH THE AIM OF STIMULATING THEIR PROACTIVE PARTICIPATION. DURING CLASSROOM-BASED TESTS A PROBLEM TO SOLVE IS GIVEN, AND THE INSTRUCTOR/TA MAKES A CASE OF HOW TO SOLVE THAT PROBLEM; THE MAIN GOAL IS TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFICULTIES STUDENTS MIGHT FACE DUE TO LACKING KNOWLEDGE OF CONCEPTS OR TO A POOR PROBLEM-SOLVING APPROACH, IN ORDER TO ALLOW THE STUDENTS TO TEST THEIR LEARNING LEVEL.
Verification of learning
STUDENTS ARE GRADED THROUGH A TWO-STEP PROCEDURE THAT CONSISTS IN A FINAL TEST AND A SUBSEQUENT ORAL EXAMINATION.
