Objectives
SCOPE
THE SCOPE OF THE CLASS IS TO PROVIDE PHD STUDENTS WITH USEFUL TOOLS TO ORGANIZE A TECHNICAL SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATION AND TO PREPARE A MANUSCRIPT FOR POSSIBLE PUBLICATION. ABOUT THE PRESENTATION, TOPICS SUCH AS THE CONTEXT, THE FORMATTING AND THE ORGANIZATION OF THE CONTENT WILL BE DISCUSSED. AS FAR AS PUBLICATION IS CONCERNED, THE COURSE WILL BE FOCUSED ON RESEARCH ARTICLES TO BE SUBMITTED TO INDEXED JOURNALS AND THE VARIOUS PHASES OF THE PROCESS WILL BE DEALT WITH (MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION, SUBMISSION TO THE JOURNAL, RESPONSE TO REVIEWERS /EDITORS ETC.), ACCORDING TO DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW (AUTHOR, REVIEWER, EDITOR).
THE CLASS WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE THE ORGANIZATION CAPABILITY OF A TECHNICAL SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATION IN RELATION TO THE CONTEXT IN WHICH IT IS CARRIED OUT (EG, SPECIALIST CONFERENCE, GENERALIST CONFERENCE, PHD ADVISORY BOARD, EDUCATIONAL CONTEXT, PROFESSIONAL CONTEXT) AND A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE PREPARATION (CONTENTS AND PREPARATION AND PUBLICATION PHASES IN AN INDEXED JOURNAL WILL BE EXPLAINED).

CAPACITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
LEARNING HOW TO INTRODUCE AND EXPLAIN THE INNOVATION OF A SCIENTIFIC WORK, PREPARING A PRESENTATION, DESIGNING THE CONTENT OF A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE, REVIEWING A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE.

AUTONOMY SKILL:
LEARNING HOW TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE METHODS FOR ORGANIZING A PRESENTATION AND A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE CORRECTLY.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
BEING ABLE TO EXPOSE THE CONTENT OF A PRESENTATION IN A CLEAR AND COMPREHENSIVE WAY, AND CAPACITY TO INTERACT WITH THE STAKEHOLDERS INVOLVED IN THE PUBLICATION OF A MANUSCRIPT (CO-AUTHORS, REVIEWERS, EDITORS).

LEARNING SKILLS:
LEARNING HOW TO APPLY THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE BY INDIPENDENTLY MANAGING (I) THE ORGANIZATION OF A PRESENTATION ACCORDING TO A CONTEXT OTHER THAN THAT SIMULATED IN THE COURSE AND (II) THE EDITING OF A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE.

JOURNAL CHOICE; AUTHORS GUIDELINES; MANUSCRIPT CONTENTS (ABSTRACT, INTRODUCTION (AND NOVELTY), MATERIAL AND METHODS (PROCEDURES), RESULTS AND DISCUSSION, CONCLUSIONS, ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS, REFERENCES; MANUSCRIPT’S SUBMISSION (COVER LETTER); EDITOR AND REVIEWERS; MANUSCRIPT REVISION (EXAMPLES OF REVISIONS AND AUTHORS’ REPLY TO EDITOR’S/REVIEWERS’ COMMENTS/REMARKS); MANUSCRIPT’S DISSEMINATION.
Teaching Methods
THE LESSONS INCLUDE FRONTAL LECTURES (80%) AND AN EXERCISE IN THE CLASSROOM IN WHICH THE PHD STUDENTS INTRODUCE AND EXPLAIN THE POSSIBLE INNOVATION OF THEIR THESIS PROJECT (20%).
Verification of learning
THE FINAL TEST INCLUDES ONE OF THE FOLLOWING TOPICS THE PHD STUDENTS WILL BE ASKED TO DISCUSS:
- PRESENTATION OF THE STATUS OF THEIR PHD THESIS WORK;
- MANUSCRIPT THEIR ARE WORKING TO;
- MANUSCRIPT REVISION AND/OR REPLY TO EDITOR’S/REVIEWERS’ COMMENTS/REMARKS.
