Objectives
THE COURSE TREATS ADVANCED TOPICS RELATED TO HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION. IN PARTICULAR, IT DEEPENS EMPIRICAL RESEARCH METHODS.

THE COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING THE STUDENTS WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OF:
•MAIN METHODS AND INTERACTIVE TECHNIQUES USED IN THE DESIGN OF INTERACTIVE SYSTEMS, WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO GESTURAL TECHNIQUES FOR MOBILE DEVICES;
•EMPIRICAL METHODS TO EVALUATE INTERACTIVE SYSTEMS;
•FOUNDATIONAL TOPICS OF HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION INCLUDING HISTORICAL CONTEXT, THE HUMAN FACTOR AND INTERACTION ELEMENTS.

THE STUDENTS WILL BE GIVEN THE CAPACITY TO:
•DESIGN, IMPLEMENT AND EVALUATE USER INTERFACES, IN PARTICULAR, INTERFACES FOR MOBILE DEVICES, SUCH AS SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS;
•CONSULT THE DIGITAL LIBRARIES CONTAINING THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE OF THE FIELD, CHOOSE THE MAIN WORKS RELATED TO A SCIENTIFIC PROJECT, ANALYZE THIER CONTENT AND STRUCTURE;
•WRITE A SCIENTIFIC REPORT THAT DESCRIBES THE RESULTS OF AN EMPIRICAL RESEARCH.

MAKING JUDGMENTS: BEING ABLE TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE THE MAIN WORKS IN THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE OF HUMAN-MACHINE INTERACTION AND BEING ABLE TO CHOOSE THE MOST APPROPRIATE EMPIRICAL EVALUATION METHODS FOR A GIVEN DESIGN PROBLEM.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS: IMPROVING THE ABILITY TO DESCRIBE IN WRITTEN FORM THE SALIENT FEATURES OF THE PROJECT WORK AND THE RESULTS OF THE EMPIRICAL TESTS CARRIED OUT DURING THE EVALUATION PHASE.

ABILITY TO LEARN: QUICKLY UNDERSTANDING AND EVALUATING THE CONTENTS OF SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES IN THE LITERATURE OF THE SECTOR.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ALGORITHMS, DATA STRUCTURES AND HIGH-LEVEL PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES, PARTICULARLY JAVA, ARE RECOMMENDED.
Contents
THE COURSE WILL TREAT THE FOLLOWING TOPICS, WHICH WILL BE APPLIED USING THE ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM:
•HISTORICAL CONTEXT (LESSONS: 2H);
•THE HUMAN FACTOR (LESSONS: 2H);
•INTERACTION ELEMENTS (LESSONS: 2H);
•SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS (LESSONS: 4H);
•DESIGNING HCI EXPERIMENTS (LESSONS: 4H);
•HYPOTHESIS TESTING (LESSONS: 4H);
•MODELING INTERACTION (LESSONS: 2H);
•WRITING AND PUBLISHING A RESEARCH PAPER (LESSONS: 2H);
•BASICS OF THE ANDROID SYSTEM (LESSONS: 8H).
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS BASED ON 30 HOURS OF LESSONS (TAUGHT IN ENGLISH) WITH THE AID OF PROJECTIONS AND OTHER MULTIMEDIA LEARNING MATERIAL, WHICH WILL BE DISTRIBUTED ONLINE TO STUDENTS VIA E-LEARNING PLATFORMS. THE LESSONS WILL HAVE AN INTERACTIVE APPROACH AND DURING THE THEORETICAL LESSONS WHERE THE STUDENTS WILL BE FREQUENTLY INVITED TO INTERACT WITH THE TEACHER AND THE COLLEAGUES.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS CERTIFIED THROUGH AN EXAMINATION, WHOSE SCORE IS IN A SCALE OF 30. THE EXAM CONSISTS OF A MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST AND OF A PROJECT.

THE TEST IS COMPOSED OF 30 MULTIPLE CHOICE ITEMS TO BE COMPLETED IN 20 MINUTES AND SEEKS TO EVALUATE THE THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT. A CORRECT ANSWER IS ASSIGNED A SCORE OF 0.5 POINTS. TO DISCOURAGE ATTEMPTS TO GUESS THE ANSWER, PENALTIES ARE PROVIDED (DEDUCTION OF THE SCORE BY SOME TENTHS) IN CASE OF AN INCORRECT ANSWER. THE MAXIMUM SCORE FOR THE WRITTEN TEST IS 15/30.

THE PROJECT SEEKS TO EVALUATE THE PRACTICAL CAPACITY OF THE STUDENT AND INCLUDES THE DESIGN AND EXECUTION OF A USER-STUDY AND THE WRITING OF A REPORT. THE PROJECT CAN BE EITHER INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP AND ALLOWS A MAXIMUM SCORE OF 20/30. THE EVALUATION OF THE PROJECTS WILL BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING ASPECTS:
• FRAMING OF THE PROBLEM IN THE RIGHT SCIENTIFIC CONTEXT;
• SCIENTIFIC RIGOR USED IN THE DESIGN OF THE EXPERIMENT;
• RESPECT OF THE IDENTIFIED PROCEDURE DURING THE EXECUTION OF THE EXPERIMENT;
• REPORT CONTENT AND STRUCTURE.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN THE COURSE WILL BE STIMULATED BY AWARDING BONUS (TENTHS OF POINTS ATTRIBUTED TO THE STUDENTS) IN SMALL COMPETITIVE ACTIVITIES (E.G., SHORT ONLINE QUIZZES ACCESSIBLE ALSO THROUGH MOBILE DEVICES) WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE DURING THE LESSONS.

THE FINAL EVALUATION WILL BE CALCULATED THROUGH THE SUM OF THE SCORES OBTAINED ON THE TEST, THE PROJECT AND POSSIBLE BONUSES. THE "LAUDE" WILL BE AWARDED TO STUDENTS WHOSE FINAL SCORE EXCEEDS 30.
