GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES: THE COURSE WILL PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH THE SKILLS NEEDED TO UNDERSTAND THE BIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS SUBSERVING THE HUMAN BEHAVIOR, THE MENTAL FUNCTIONS AND THE EMOTIONAL-AFFECTIVE AND MOTIVATIONAL STATES. KNOWING AND UNDERSTANDING: THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY. THE WILL ALSO BE INTRODUCED TO THE STUDY OF THE BASIS COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS, SUCH AS MEMORY, LEARNING, REASONING, AND THEIR RELATIONS WITH EMOTIONS. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE MAIN GOAL IS DEVELOPING CRITICAL THINKING WHICH CAN ALLOW STUDENTS TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THEORETICAL PARADIGMS, METHODOLOGIES AND ADVANCES OF CURRENT RESEARCH ON COGNITIVE PROCESSES. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THAT KNOWLEDGE TO DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTS OF SOCIETY AND HUMAN BEHAVIOUR IN GENERAL. MAKING JUDGMENTS: STUDENTS WILL LEARN BASIC INTELLECTUAL TOOLS TO DEVELOP THEIR OWN CRITICAL VIEW ON THE DIFFERENT THEORIES, EMPHASIZING BOTH THE STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESS OF SUCH THEORIES. COMMUNICATION SKILLS: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE THEIR KNOWLEDGE AT DIFFERENT LEVELS (BOTH TO AN AUDIENCE OF EXPERTS AND TO ONE OF NON-SPECIALISTS), WITH SPECIFIC LANGUAGE PROPERTIES AND LEXICAL SKILLS, AND USING THE MOST APPROPRIATE KIND OF LANGUAGE FOR EACH CIRCUMSTANCE. LEARNING SKILLS: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND INTERPRET COMPLEX TEXTS AND USE BIBLIOGRAPHIC TOOLS, TO IDENTIFY AND SELECT THE SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE USEFUL FOR INCREASING THEIR KNOWLEDGE |

THE COURSE IS DIVIDED INTO THREE PARTS. FIRST PART WILL ADDRESS ISSUES REGARDING ATTENTION, MEMORY, THINKING AND LEARNING (12 HOURS). SECOND PART: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN EMOTION AND COGNITION (12 HOURS) THIRD PART: DECISION MAKING AND BIASES (6 HOURS). |

THE COURSE WILL BE TAUGHT TROUGH FRONTAL LESSONS. VIDEOCLIPS/MOVIES WILL BE USED TO EXPLAIN HOW PSYCHOLOGICAL PROCESSES AND BEHAVIOURS HAPPEN IN DAILY LIFE, AND TO ILLUSTRATE THE MOST IMPORTANT EXPERIMENTS OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY. COMMENTS AND DISCUSSIONS WILL BE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND HOW PSYCHOLOGICAL PROCESS EXPLAIN REAL AND DAILY LIFE PHENOMENA. |

THE EXAM IS AIMED AT VERIFYING THE ACQUISITION BY STUDENTS OF THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE RELATING TO THE TOPICS PRESENTED IN CLASS. THE FINAL EXAM IS IN WRITTEN FORM. IT COMPRISES 30 CLOSE-FORMAT QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED IN 35 MINUTES (1 POINT FOR EVERY CORRECT ANSWER, 0 FOR EVERY WRONG ANSWER).THE QUESTIONS, ALTHOUGH IN CLOSE FORMAT, DO NOT ASK TO SIMPLY MEMORIZE THE KEY CONCEPTS, BUT TO DEEPLY UNDERSTAND THE CONTENTS OF COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO MAKE CONNECTIONS AMONG THEM. ONLY STUDENTS WHO OBTAINED A GRADE OF 25 AT THE WRITTEN TEST OR HIGHER WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE THE OPTIONAL ORAL EXAM. THE ORAL EXAM IS AIMED TO INVESTIGATE IN DEPTH A SPECIFIC TOPIC AMONG THOSE ILLUSTRATED DURING THE COURSE AND WILL BE EVALUATED FROM 0 TO 3 GRADE POINTS, THAT WILL BE ADDED TO THE GRADE OF THE WRITTEN TEST . |
