Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE COURSE INTRODUCES THEORY AND APPLICATIONS FOR OPTIMIZATION IN ENGINEERING DESIGN. STUDENTS WILL LEARN THE GENERAL FORMULATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS AND WILL LEARN BASIC ALGORITHMIC METHODS FOR THEIR PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS BY COMMONLY AVAILABLE SOLVERS AND SOFTWARE.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING – ENGINEERING ANALYSIS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ANALYSE OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS AND COMPARE SUITABLE SOLUTION METHODS.

APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING – DESIGN ANALYSIS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY THE LEARNED METHODS TO FIND OPTIMAL DESIGN SOLUTIONS.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO FORMULATE AN OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM FOR ENGINEERING DESIGN AND MODEL PARAMETER CALIBRATION AND CHOOSE SUITABLE SOLUTION METHODS.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE ORALLY AND WRITE A REPORT ON USED OPTIMIZATION METHODS AND OBTAINED RESULTS.

LEARNING SKILLS
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS THAN THOSE PRESENTED IN THE COURSE AND TO STUDY THE SUBJECT CONTENTS FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES.

MATHEMATICAL FORMULATION OF OPTIMIZATION PROBLEMS, UNCONSTRAINED OPTIMIZATION, CONSTRAINED OPTIMIZATION, GRAPHICAL METHODS, LINEAR PROGRAMMING METHODS, NON-LINEAR PROGRAMMING METHODS, MULTIOBJECTIVE OPTIMIZATION, DISCRETE OPTIMIZATION, SOLVERS AND OPTIMIZATION SOFTWARE.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LECTURES (60%), CLASSROOM EXERCISES (15%), AND COMPUTER LABORATORY PRACTICE (25%).
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES IS VERIFIED BY AN EXAM CONSISTING OF A DISCUSSION ON THE FORMULATION AND SOLUTION OF AN OPTIMIZATION PROBLEM RELEVANT TO A TOPIC OF INTEREST TO THE STUDENT.
