Objectives
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THE LANGUAGE AND THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
ACQUISITION OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF CHEMISTRY, IN PARTICULAR AS CONCERNS THE STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER, THE PRINCIPLES OF CHEMICAL REACTIVITY AND THE TECHNIQUES THAT ALLOW TO DESCRIBE AND PREDICT THE PERFORMANCE OF THE CHEMICAL REACTIONS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO PERFORM THE CALCULATIONS NECESSARY TO STUDY THE DIFFERENT CLASSES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS. HE/SHE WILL BE ALSO ABLE TO EVALUATE THE TRANSFORMATIONS OF MATTER, AND APPLY THE CORRECT THEORETICAL INTERPRETATION.

MAKING JUDGMENTS
THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO:
- CRITICALLY EVALUATE THE VALIDITY AND LIMITS OF APPROXIMATION OF THE INTERPRETATIVE MODELS OF THE PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL BEHAVIOR OF MATTER, DEPENDING ON THE STRUCTURE
- USE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO UNDERSTAND THE CRITERIA THAT GOVERN THE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION OF CHEMICAL SUBSTANCES USING THE FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY

COMMUNICATION SKILLS.
THE COURSE WILL TEND TO FAVOR THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO PRESENT THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN A CLEAR AND RIGOROUS WAY. AT THE END OF THE COURSE THE STUDENT MUST BE ABLE TO CORRECTLY STATE DEFINITIONS, PROBLEMS AND THEOREMS REGARDING GENERAL CHEMISTRY.

LEARNING SKILL.

THE COURSE IS ORGANIZED TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEMISTRY. THE AIM IS TO DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO DEAL WITH THE STUDY OF CHEMISTRY BY REFERRING TO THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD OF INVESTIGATION, DEVELOPING LOGICAL-DEDUCTIVE SKILLS ALSO BY SOLVING STOICHIOMETRY PROBLEMS. THIS WILL SERVE TO ACQUIRE THE FOUNDATIONS AND METHODOLOGIES NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE A GOOD LEVEL OF AUTONOMY REGARDING THE ANALYSIS OF SIMPLE PROBLEMS OF GENERAL CHEMISTRY.
Prerequisites
IT IS REQUIRED THAT STUDENTS HAVE A GOOD KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC MATH TOPICS COVERED IN HIGH SCHOOL. IN PARTICULAR, KNOWLEDGE OF ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA, METHODS FOR SOLVING EQUATIONS OF FIRST AND SECOND DEGREE, AND LOGARITHMS ARE REQUIRED.
Contents
MATTER, THE ATOMS AND MOLECULES (8H). CHEMICAL ELEMENTS: THE PERIODIC TABLE (4H). TYPE AND CLASSIFICATION OF CHEMICAL BONDS (10H). INTERATOMIC FORCES AND THE STATES OF AGGREGATION OF MATTER (6H). FUNDAMENTALS OF KINETICS (2H). CHEMICAL EQUILIBRIUM (2H). SOLUTIONS (4H). ACIDS, BASES AND SALTS (4H).

STOICHIOMETRY (16H):
ATOM, ATOMIC MASS, MOLECULES, MOLECULAR MASS, IONIC COMPOUNDS (2H). MINIMUM FORMULA AND MOLECULAR FORMULA (2H). THE MOLE. NOT REDOX CHEMICAL EQUATIONS, BALANCE. REDOX REACTIONS, BALANCE (2H). CHEMICAL NOMENCLATURE (2H). WEIGHT AND VOLUMETRIC RATIOS AND REACTIONS (2H). GAS SYSTEMS (2H). SOLUTIONS (2H). CHEMICAL HOMOGENEOUS EQUILIBRIA, (2H).
Teaching Methods
LECTURES (4 CFU = 32 HOURS) AND STOICHIOMETRY EXERCISES (2 CFU = 24 HOURS).

AIM OF THE LECTURES IS TO EXPLAIN THE TOPICS OF THE TEACHING COURSE, FROM DEFINITIONS TO SPECIFIC CASES AND ANY EXCEPTIONS. STOICHIOMETRY PART CONTEMPLATES THE SOLVING OF NUMERICAL EXERCISES OF THE DIFFERENT TOPICS.
CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE EXERCISES RESULT WILL BE USED TO VERIFICATE THE CONSISTENCY WITH THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF CHEMISTRY.
Verification of learning
BOTH WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAMINATIONS ARE REQUIRED. THE ORAL EXAMINATION CAN BE ACCESSED ONLY AFTER A POSITIVE RESULT OF THE WRITTEN TEST (MINIMUM OF 18 POINTS ACQUIRED).

WRITTEN EXAMINATION OF STOICHIOMETRY: THE TEST CONSISTS IN THE RESOLUTION OF 4 STOICHIOMETRY EXERCISES ON THE TOPICS STUDIED DURING THE TEACHING CLASS , WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE TRAINING OBJECTIVES DETAILED IN THE DEDICATED SECTION (IN PARTICULAR: MINIMUM FORMULA AND MOLECULAR FORMULA; BALANCE OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS AND WEIGHT RATIOS, ACID / BASIC SOLUTIONS, BUFFER SOLUTIONS), IN A TIME OF 2 HOURS.

ORAL TEST: THE ORAL EXAMINATION IS NORMALLY SCHEDULED FEW DAYS AFTER THE WRITTEN TEST AND INCLUDES A BRIEF DISCUSSION OF THE RESULTS OF THE WRITTEN TEST, AND AT LEAST TWO QUESTIONS ABOUT OTHER TOPICS OF THE PROGRAM (STRUCTURE, PROPERTIES AND TRASFORMATION OF MATTER). STUDENTS HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE UNDERSTANDING OF SELECTED TOPICS AND ADEQUATE LANGUAGE SKILLS.

THE MINIMUM EVALUATION (18/30) INDICATES A SUFFICIENT UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ELEMENTS AND OF THE STRUCTURE OF MATTER AND/OR UNCERTAINTIES IN SOME OF THE DISCUSSED TOPICS. THE MAXIMUM EVALUATION (30/30) INDICATES THE DEEPENED KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THE ADDRESSED TOPICS AND EXCELLENT LANGUAGE SKILLS.
A “LAUDE” IS ATTRIBUTED WHEN THE STUDENT ALSO SHOWS THE ABILITY OF AUTONOMOUS PROCESSING AND HE/HER IS ABLE TO DEAL WITH UNUSUAL PROBLEMS AMONG THOSE DISCUSSED DURING THE ORAL EXAMINATION.
