THE AIM OF THIS COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE THE STUDENT TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE BASIC CATALYTIC PROCESSES CARRIED OUT IN LAB AND INDUSTRIAL SCALE FOLLOWING SUSTAINABLE METHODOLOGIES THAT RESPECT THE PRINCIPLES OF GREEN CHEMISTRY. THE STUDENT: -WILL BE ABLE TO EVALUATE SUSTAINABILITY OF A CHEMICAL REACTION AND DEFINE THE MOST SUSTAINABLE EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS IN HOMOGENEOUS AND HETEROGENEOUS METAL CATALYZED PROCESSES; -WILL KNOW THE BASIC PLATFORM MOLECULES RESULTING FROM BIOMASS VALORIZATION AND THEIR USE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FINE CHEMICALS AND ORGANIC POLYMERS; WILL KNOW THE MAIN SUSTAINABLE SYNTHETIC METHODOLOGIES BASED ON METAL CATALYSTS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF SMALL MOLECULES AND MACROMOLECULES OF INTEREST FOR CHEMICAL INDUSTRY. THE MAIN ACQUIRED SKILLS WILL BE: -TO DISCUSS IN CRITICAL WAY USING CRITERIA FOR DEFINING SUSTAINABILITY OF A CHEMICAL REACTION OR AN INDUSTRIAL PROCESS; -TO ASSESS PROTOCOLS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF FINE CHEMICALS OR ORGANIC POLYMERS; -TO SUGGEST NEW FIELDS OF APPLICATION OF CATALYSIS AND POLYMERIZATION TECHNIQUES IN GREEN CHEMISTRY; THE STUDENT WILL BE ALSO ABLE: -TO USE BASIC KNOWELEDGE IN INORGANIC AND ORGANOOMETALLIC CHEMISTRY FOR THE FULL UNDERSTANDING OF METAL CATALYZED PROCESSES; -TO UNDERSTAND CATALYTIC CYCLES IN TERMS OF A SEQUENCE OF ELEMENTARY REACTION STEPS; - TO EVALUATE KINETIC AND THERMODYNAMIC FACTORS DETERMINING ACTIVITY AND SELECTIVITY OF A METAL CATALYST APPLIED IN A CHEMICAL REACTION. THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE INTERDISCIPLINARY COGNITIVE ABILITIES FOR APPLYING BASIC KNOWLEDGES IN INORGANIC, ORGANIC AND INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY FOR THE TREATMENT OF COMPLEX REACTIONS AND HIGHLIGHT FACTORS DETERMINING THE SELECTIVE COURSE OF THE REACTIONS. THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE: -TO RECOVER UPDATED INFORMATION FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC LITERATURE AVAILABLE IN THE WEB; -TO UNDERSTAND AND STUDY COMPLEX TEXTS ALSO IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE. |

Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE TEACHING COURSE CONSISTS OF TWO PARTS AIDED BY MULTIMEDIA PRESENTATIONS, FOR A TOTAL OF 92 HOURS. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
ACHIEVING THE OBJECTIVES OF LEARNING IS VERIFIED BY EXAMINATION WITH AN EVALUATION IN THIRTIETH. THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF WRITTEN TESTS DURING THE COURSE (OPTIONAL). IF THE STUDENT PASSES THESE TESTS, HE/SHE DOES NOT HAVE TO ATTEND THE FINAL TEST. THE FINAL EXAMINATION CONSISTS IN A WRITTEN TEST CONTAINING FIVE OPEN QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED IN 2 HOURS. THE TEST IS POSITIVELY EVALUATED WHEN THREE OF FIVE QUESTIONS ARE PROPERLY DISCUSSED/TREATED. IN THE CASE OF NOT POSITIVE EVALUATION IN THIS ASSESSMENT, THE STUDENT CAN BE INVITED TO TAKE ORAL EXAM. |
