Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A SOLID KNOWLEDGE OF SOCIAL PHENOMENA, WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE ANALYSIS OF THEIR HISTORICAL AND ANTHROPOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS. STUDENTS WILL ACQUIRE SKILLS IN USING SOCIOLOGICAL CATEGORIES IN THE READING AND EVALUATION OF THE MAIN SOCIAL PHENOMENA, IN PARTICULAR:
WITH REGARD TO KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
A) LEARNING THE FOUNDATIONAL CONCEPTS OF SOCIOLOGY THROUGH THE MAIN THEORETICAL APPROACHES.
B) UNDERSTANDING THE SPECIFICITY OF THE SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE AS A TOOL FOR INVESTIGATING AND INTERPRETING THE SOCIAL WORLD.
C) DEVELOPING SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION.
WITH REGARD TO APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
A) KNOWING AND APPLYING THE MAIN THEORETICAL TOOLS OF THE DISCIPLINE TO THE ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL PROCESSES.
B) APPLYING SOME OF THE QUALITATIVE RESEARCH TOOLS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH.
C) UNDERSTANDING AND USING SOCIOLOGICAL LANGUAGE.
WITH REGARD TO AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT:
A) DEVELOPING CRITICAL ANALYSIS SKILLS.
B) DEVELOPING THE ABILITY TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH PATHS TO ACHIEVE THE COGNITIVE OBJECTIVE.
C) DEVELOPING THE ABILITY TO DECONSTRUCT COMMON SENSE.

THE COURSE INTRODUCES THE STUDENT TO ISSUES RELATED TO THE STUDY OF HUMAN SOCIETIES THROUGH A PROCESS OF EPISTEMOLOGICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL REFLECTION WITH THE AIM OF OUTLINING THE MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS DISCIPLINE. THEMES SUCH AS THE FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN SOCIETY, THE STRUCTURE THAT CHARACTERIZES THE SOCIAL FABRIC, AND THE PROCESSES THAT REGULATE SOCIETY WILL BE ADDRESSED.
IN THE SECOND PART OF THE COURSE, ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF METHODOLOGY USEFUL FOR CONDUCTING AN ADEQUATE PROCESS OF EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION IN THE FIELD OF SOCIAL SCIENCES WILL BE INTRODUCED. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS PAID TO THE MAIN TECHNIQUES (OBSERVATION, QUESTIONING) OF SOCIAL EMPIRICAL RESEARCH THAT FALL UNDER A QUALITATIVE APPROACH.
Teaching Methods
TEACHING TAKES PLACE THROUGH LECTURES WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO ENCOURAGE COMPARISON AND DEBATE THROUGH THE PRESENTATION OF EMPIRICAL RESEARCH DEVELOPED AROUND THE DIFFERENT TOPICS ADDRESSED.
Verification of learning
THE LEARNING ASSESSMENT TAKES PLACE THROUGH AN ORAL INTERVIEW IN WHICH THE STUDENT IS REQUIRED TO COMPETENTLY DEVELOP THE TOPICS COVERED DURING THE LESSONS. THE EVALUATION TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE COMPLETENESS AND RELEVANCE OF THE ANSWERS AS WELL AS THE ABILITY TO ESTABLISH CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE TOPICS ADDRESSED AND USE THE SPECIFIC LANGUAGE OF THE DISCIPLINE. A SCORE EXPRESSED IN THIRTIETHS IS ASSIGNED, AND TO OBTAIN A PASSING GRADE, IT IS NECESSARY TO ACHIEVE A SCORE OF AT LEAST 18/30.
