THE GOAL OF THE LAB IS TO PROMOTE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE COGNITIVE AND TECHNICAL TOOLS OF RESEARCH METHODS, ACCORDING TO THE POSSIBLE EMPIRICAL RESEARCH DESIGNS THAT MAY EVOLVE TO UNDERSTAND CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL PHENOMENA. THE LABORATORY AIMS FOR STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES AND THEN LEARN TO CRITICALLY APPLY TECHNIQUES OF DATA COLLECTION, PROCESSING AND ANALYSIS. SPECIFICALLY, IT TEACHES THE ABILITY TO ORGANIZE, PROCESS, AND ANALYSE QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE DATA USING THE MOST POPULAR SOFTWARE, AND DEVELOPS THE ABILITY TO APPROPRIATELY COMMUNICATE FINDINGS OBTAINED THROUGH THE PROPER USE OF RESEARCH TOOLS TO PROFESSIONAL AND NON-PROFESSIONAL INTERLOCUTORS. |

THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO TEACH THE METHODS AND MAIN TECHNIQUES OF SOCIAL RESEARCH. IN PARTICULAR, BEGINNING WITH THE CONCEPTUALIZATION PROCEDURES OF COGNITIVE GOAL SETTING, THE VARIOUS PHASES OF THE DESIGN OF EMPIRICAL RESEARCH WILL BE COVERED, WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE TECHNIQUES OF AND DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS. IN PARTICULAR, THE FOLLOWING TOPICS WILL BE COVERED: OBJECTIVES AND TYPES OF APPLIED SOCIAL RESEARCH; TECHNIQUES OF DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS FOR APPLIED SOCIAL RESEARCH; APPLIED SOCIAL RESEARCH AIMED AT ASSESSING AND ANALYZING THE NEEDS (INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIAL) OF THE POPULATION BELONGING TO A COMMUNITY, MEASURING THE LEVEL OF WELL-BEING (INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIAL) AND QUALITY OF LIFE; THE OPERATIONALIZATION PROCESS: FROM CONCEPTS TO INDICATORS. COLLECTING AND ANALYZING SECONDARY DATA; OPEN DATA; PROBLEMS OF RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY; CASE STUDIES; DEFINITION OF INDICATORS. SUBJECTIVE AND STRUCTURAL, INDIVIDUAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL INDICATORS. SOCIAL INDICATORS AND SOCIAL POLICY. IN PARTICULAR, THE APPLICATION CONTEXTS OF DIFFERENT METHODS FOR MEASURING AND ANALYZING THE LEVEL OF "WELL-BEING" AND THE IMPACT ON INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIAL GROUPS DUE TO CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL TRANSFORMATIONS WILL BE ADDRESSED IN A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE. AMONG OTHER THINGS, THE LAB AIMS TO FOSTER OPPORTUNITIES FOR HANDS-ON EXPERIMENTATION WITH THESE SKILLS THROUGH GROUP WORK USING RESOURCES AND PROGRAMS AVAILABLE IN THE DIGITAL SPACE. THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS COURSE ARE FOR STUDENTS TO: 1.DEVELOP THEIR OWN EMPIRICAL RESEARCH QUESTION(S) AND THE ABILITY TO FIND ANSWERS. 2.UNDERSTAND HOW SOCIAL SCIENTISTS GENERATE OUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOCIAL WORLD AND WHY WE DO SO. 3.KNOW HOW TO USE A VARIETY OF TOOLS AND APPROACHES TO ASSIST IN YOUR (OR OTHERS) RESEARCH. |
Teaching Methods | |
---|---|
THE COURSE INCLUDES HANDS-ON EXERCISES, CASE STUDY ANALYSIS, AND A THEORETICAL-PRACTICAL OVERVIEW OF A RESEARCH DESIGN. THROUGH A LABORATORY-LIKE TEACHING METHOD, THE COURSE ENVISIONS THAT THE CONTENT WILL BE LEARNED THROUGH THE SIMULATION OF PRACTICAL APPLICABLE EXERCISES, STARTING FROM SIMULATIONS OF ACTUAL CASES OF APPLIED EMPIRICAL RESEARCH. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
VERIFICATION OF WHAT HAS BEEN LEARNED IS DONE THROUGH A FINAL WRITTEN AND/OR ORAL TEST THAT ASSESSES THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS ACQUIRED DURING THE COURSE. THE ASSESSMENT CONSIDERS THE FOLLOWING DIMENSIONS: CONTENT KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY TO CONSTRUCT A RESEARCH PROJECT, APPROPRIATENESS OF THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL REFERENCES, FEATURES OF LANGUAGE, AND CLARITY OF PRESENTATION. |
