Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT INTRODUCING THE BASIC PRINCIPLES THAT HELP UNDERSTANDING THE MAIN CHOICES OF ECONOMIC AGENTS.
THE OBJECTIVE IS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH A KNOWLEDGE IN THE FIELD OF ECONOMIC ANALYSIS THAT WILL BE USEFUL FOR IDENTIFYING THE DECISION PROCESS OF HOUSEHOLDS AND FIRMS AND UNDERSTANDING THE FUNCTIONING OF MARKETS.
NAMELY:
- THE DETERMINANTS OF DEMAND AND SUPPLY;
- THE DETERMINANTS OF CONSUMPTION, LABOUR AND SAVINGS;
- THE DETERMINANTS OF FIRMS’ PRODUCTION CHOICES;
- THE FUNCTIONING OF COMPETITIVE, MONOPOLISTIC AND OLIGOPOLISTIC MARKETS.
STUDENTS’ MAIN ACQUIRED SKILLS (I.E. THEIR ABILITY OF APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING) WILL BE:
- TO ANALYSE THOSE PHENOMENA THAT AFFECT THE EQUILIBRIUM OF REAL WORLD MARKETS;
- TO EXPLAIN THE BEHAVIOUR OF ECONOMIC AGENTS (HOUSEHOLDS AND FIRMS);
- TO IDENTIFY FIRMS’ DECISIONS ACCORDING TO THE TYPE OF MARKET STRUCTURE IN WHICH THEY OPERATE;
- TO INTERPRET THE GOVERNMENT’S ROLE IN THE ECONOMY.
Prerequisites
BASICS OF MATHS
IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO TAKE THE EXAM BEFORE THE MATHS EXAM
Contents
- BASIC ECONOMIC CONCEPTS (2 HOURS)
- DEMAND, SUPPLY, PRICES, ELASTICITY (6 HOURS)
- INDIVIDUAL DECISIONS: PREFERENCES, UTILITY, CONSUMPTION, LABOUR SUPPLY, SAVINGS (16 HOURS)
- PRODUCTION AND COST THEORY (10 HOURS)
- PERFECTLY COMPETITIVE MARKETS: THEORY AND APPLICATIONS (16 HOURS)
- MONOPOLY (4 HOURS)
- GAME THEORY AND STRATEGIC BEHAVIOUR (2 HOURS)
- OLIGOPOLY AND MONOPOLISTIC COMPETITION (4 HOURS)
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE IS ORGANISED IN 30 2-HOURS LECTURES FOR A TOTAL OF 60 HOURS. TIME WILL BE DEVOTED TO SOLVING EXERCISES AND OTHER PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS RELATED TO CASE STUDIES. ALTHOUGH NOT COMPULSORY, ATTENDING THE LECTURES IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Verification of learning
THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE IS ASSESSED THROUGH A WRITTEN EXAM WITH MARKS EXPRESSED IN 30TH'S, AND POSSIBLY AN ORAL EXAM PROVIDED A PASS HAS BEEN OBTAINED ON THE WRITTEN PART. THE MINIMUM GRADE FOR A PASS IS 18. THE EXAM LASTS 60 MINUTES AND AIMS AT VERIFYING, IN A TRANSPARENT AND OBJECTIVE WAY, THE LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING ACQUIRED BY THE STUDENT OF THE COURSE PROGRAMME. THE TEST IS STRUCTURED IN FOUR THEORY QUESTIONS AND FOUR EXERCISES. THE THEORETICAL QUESTIONS ARE DESIGNED TO EVALUATE THE STUDENT'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROGRAM AND THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ECONOMIC CONCEPTS DEVELOPED THEREIN. SOLUTION OF THE EXERCISES REQUIRES THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS STUDIED DURING THE COURSE AND THE APPLICATION OF THE METHODOLOGIES ACQUIRED DURING CLASSES AND TUTORIALS.
THE STUDENT IS INFORMED OF THE MARK ASSIGNED TO EACH EXERCISE OR THEORETICAL QUESTION.
INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP ACTIVITIES ARE ORGANISED DURING THE COURSE TO ASSESS THE STUDENT'S LEARNING PROCESS AND THE ABILITY TO APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED TO PRACTICAL PROBLEMS. UP TO 20% OF THE TOTAL GRADE IS OBTAINED BY TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE PERFORMANCE IN SUCH ACTIVITIES.
DURING THE WRITTEN EXAM, IT IS NOT ALLOWED THE USE OF TEXTS, COMPUTERS, CELL PHONES, TABLETS OR SMART WATCHES. IN CASE THE EXERCISES REQUIRED NUMERIC CALCULATIONS, A CALCULATOR MAY BE USED.
