Objectives
THE COURSE AIMS AT TRAINING AND EDUCATING STUDENTS TO CRITICALLY UNDERSTAND AND APPROACH AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA THROUGH AN AUTHENTIC INTERDISCIPLINARY METHODOLOGY, IN ORDER TO CREATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RANGE FROM A RESEARCH ON HISTORICAL SOURCES TO ECONOMIC ANALYSIS, AS WELL AS FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH TO TEXTUAL HERMENEUTICS. STUDENTS WILL BE ALSO TRAINED TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE AUDIOVISUAL MEDIA BY FOCUSING ON THE MATERIAL AND SYMBOLIC IMPACT OF SOCIAL CONFLICTS. THE STUDENT WILL ACQUIRE THIS KNOWLEDGE AND DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE THE FUNCTION OF THE MASS MEDIA IN THE ADVANCED CAPITALIST ERA
IN ADDITION, IT WILL APPLY IT CREATIVELY IN SIMULATED WORK SITUATIONS TYPICAL OF THE CULTURE INDUSTRY.

THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO ENLIGHTEN A DARK AND CONTROVERSIAL ASPECT OF WESTERN SOCIETIES: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN NARRATION, SCIENCE AND COLONIAL DOMINATION.
THE COURSE WILL ANALYZE, IN GENERAL, THE LEGITIMIZATION OR CRITICISM ROLE THAT GREAT EUROPEAN LITERATURE HAS PLAYED IN SYMBOLIC REPRESENTATIONS OF THE RUTHLESS COLONIAL CONQUESTS OF WESTERN EMPIRES.
MORE SPECIFICALLY, JULES VERNE'S NARRATIVE CASE WILL BE EXAMINED, HIS EXTREMELY POSITIVE VISION OF THE FRENCH COLONIALISM IN ALGERIA AND THE UNCONSCIOUS ENDORSEMENT GIVEN TO IT, FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR ONWARDS, BY THOSE HUMAN SCIENCES THAT, HAVING ASSUMED THE TASK OF TAKING HIS NOVELS AWAY FROM THE CHILD'S GENRE, SHOULD INSTEAD HAVE DENOUNCED IT.
Teaching Methods
ANALYSIS OF ORIGINAL TEXTS, SUPPORTED BY AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS AND THEIR DISCUSSION WITH THE STUDENTS; PRACTICAL EXERCITATIONS.
Verification of learning
STUDENT LEARNING DURING THE COURSE WILL BE CONSTANTLY VERIFIED THROUGH A SERIES OF PERIODIC EXERCISES IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE KEY CONCEPTS AND METHODOLOGIES' ACQUISITION, AS WELL AS STUDENTS' ABILITY TO SHARE IT WITH A SPIRIT OF COOPERATION AND SOLIDARITY WITH OTHER COLLEAGUES.THE FINAL EXAM WILL CONSIST OF AN-HOUR LONG TEST COMPOSED OF TWELVE OPEN-ENDED QUESTIONS AIMING TO VERIFY THE LEVEL OF THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL LEARNING DURING THE COURSE.
