Objectives
EDUCATIONAL AIMS
THIS COURSE AIMS AT PROVIDING A CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF ANALOGUE AND DIGITAL MEDIA. STUDENTS WILL BE INTRODUCED TO AN AUTHENTIC INTERDISCIPLINARY METHODOLOGY, RANGING FROM THE RETRIEVAL OF HISTORICAL SOURCES TO ECONOMIC ANALYSIS, FROM SUBJECT’S PSYCHOLOGY TO TEXTUAL HERMENEUTICS. AT THE HEART OF THE TRAINING PROCESS WILL BE THE ROLE – BOTH MATERIAL AND SYMBOLIC - PLAYED BY SOCIAL CONFLICTS. THROUGH THE LEARNING PROCESS, STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT SKILLS THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO CRITICALLY ANALYZE THE MASS-MEDIA’S ROLE IN RELATION TO CONFLICTS PRODUCED BY CONTEMPORARY CAPITALISM.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO PROVE AN ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE OF THE VARIOUS DISCIPLINES COMPOSING THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. A KNOWLEDGE THAT, ON THE ONE HAND, WILL STRENGTHEN THE ONE ACQUIRED IN THE FIRST STAGE OF THE STUDY AND, ON THE OTHER, WILL ENABLE THEM TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE INTERPRETATIONS.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND AND USE THEORETICAL CONCEPTS IN A CLEAR AND SOPHISTICATED WAY, TO APPLY A SOCIOLOGICAL THINKING TO SPECIFIC SOCIAL AND TERRITORIAL CONTEXTS; TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE HYPOTHESES CAPABLE OF CAPTURING THE ONGOING DYNAMICS OF ECONOMIC AND CULTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS; TO ELABORATE CONCLUSIONS AND PROVIDE USEFUL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE POLICY MAKERS..

Prerequisites
GOOD READINGS IN THE FIELD OF SOCIAL THEORY (CLASSICAL AND CONTEMPORARY). DAILY CONFIDENCE WITH THE NATIONAL AND FOREIGN PRESS. A GOOD ARCHIVE OF FILMIC IMAGES, COMICS AND TV SHOWS.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS COURSE IS TO HIGHLIGHT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL SCIENCE, NEOCOLONIAL DOMINATION AND CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE.
IN GENERAL, THE COLONIALISM GENESIS AND EVOLUTION WILL BE STUDIED THROUGH THE IRISH MODEL, AS DEFINED BY KARL MARX AT THE DAWN OF MODERNITY AND THE ALGERIAN MODEL, DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, SIMULTANEOUSLY ANALYZED BY JEAN-PAUL SARTRE AND PIERRE BOURDIEU.
IN PARTICULAR, WILL BE EXAMINED THE CASE OF THE ITALIAN COLONIAL LITERATURE, WHICH HAS FLOURISHED OVER THE LAST DECADE.
THE COURSE AIMS AT DEMONSTRATING HOW A CERTAIN SOCIAL SCIENCE AND A PARTICULAR TYPE OF NARRATION, ALTHOUGH WITH VERY DIFFERENT LANGUAGES AND CONCEPTUAL TOOLS, ARE ABLE TO PURSUE THE SAME GOAL: DEVELOP CONFLICT AND CRACK THE MATERIAL AND SYMBOLIC COLLABORATION WITH COLONIALISM, YESTERDAY’S AND TODAY’S.

WHOLE CLASS TEACHING. GROUP ACTIVITIES: READING TEXTS; VIEWING, ANALYZING AND COMMENTING ON AUDIOVISUAL MATERIAL. WRITING WORKSHOPS.
