THE MAIN GOAL OF THIS COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO A CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIAL PHENOMENA RELATED TO ENVIRONMENT, FROM POLLUTION TO FOOD SOPHISTICATION AND ECOLOGICAL DISASTERS. JOURNALISTIC INVESTIGATION WILL HELP STUDENTS DEVELOP INVESTIGATIVE SKILLS THAT WILL LEAD THEM TO A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL REASONS BEHIND THE SO-CALLED ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM. KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION STUDENTS WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY, THEORIES AND METHODOLOGIES OF JOURNALISTIC INVESTIGATION. FURTHERMORE, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PARTICULAR INVESTIGATIVE GENRE AND JOURNALISM AND, MORE GENERALLY, BETWEEN THE INFORMATION SYSTEM AND THE EVOLUTION OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY CAPITALIST SOCIETY. COMPETENCE IN APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING PARTICIPANTS ARE EXPECTED TO PROVE THEIR ABILITY IN IMPLEMENTING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE THROUGH A NUMBER OF WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES IN WHICH THEY WILL TRAIN THEMSELVES TO DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISTIC INVESTIGATIONS BASED ON THE THEORIES, METHODS AND CASES STUDIED DURING THE COURSE. |

AMONG THE COUNTLESS GENRES AND SUB-GENRES OF JOURNALISM, INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN SCIENCES. WHILE ITS METHODS (SOURCING, VERIFYING RELIABILITY, FIELD OBSERVATION, INTERVIEWS, AND CONSULTING WEB DATABASES) BRINGS IT VERY CLOSE TO QUALITATIVE SOCIAL RESEARCH, ITS MAIN GOAL, NAMELY REPORTING THE TRUTH ABOUT INCONVENIENT AND DANGEROUS SOCIAL PHENOMENA (WARS, CORRUPTION, AND CRIME) PLACES IT WITHIN THE GREAT TRADITION OF PHILOSOPHICAL RESEARCH. THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THIS MILITANT FORM OF CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOCIAL WORLD THROUGH A GRADUAL AND STRUCTURAL PATH. THE FIRST PART FOCUSES ON THE ANALYSIS OF THOSE SOCIAL THEORIES ACCORDING TO WHICH JOURNALISM IS BORN AND DEVELOPED IN THE WAKE OF CAPITALISM, AND JOURNALISTIC ACTIVITY MUST BE SUBORDINATED TO THE TASK OF TELLING THE TRUTH. THE STUDY OF CLASSIC AND MODERN SOCIOLOGICAL TEXTS IS ACCOMPANIED BY THAT OF SPECIFIC CASE STUDIES. THE SECOND PART DEALS WITH THE BIRTH OF SOCIAL INVESTIGATION IN ITALY, A GENRE THAT BOASTS AN ILLUSTRIOUS TRADITION FOUNDED, STARTING FROM THE IMMEDIATE POST-WWII, NOT ONLY BY PROFESSIONAL SOCIOLOGISTS BUT ALSO BY WRITERS AND JOURNALISTS ANIMATED BY GREAT CIVIC COMMITMENT. THE THIRD PART PROJECTS ITSELF IN MEDIA RES, PRIVILEGING ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM AS A FORM OF INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM. WILL BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION THOSE INVESTIGATIONS THAT ARE ABLE TO CONNECT ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS TO THE INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM AND THE IMPACT OF CAPITALIST PRODUCTION ON HUMAN HEALTH, AS IN THE CASE OF THE ILVA PLANT IN TARANTO. THE FOURTH PART STARTS FROM TINA MERLIN’S INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM ON THE VAJONT DISASTER TO HIGHLIGHT ITS RELEVANCE TO THE CURRENT PARADIGM OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE. THE COURSE ALSO INCLUDES WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES IN WHICH STUDENTS WILL PRACTICE WRITING SURVEYS BASED ON THEORIES, METHODS AND TOPICS ADDRESSED DURING THE COURSE. |

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED IN LECTURES AND IN-CLASS EXERCISES. LECTURES WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE ON THE MAIN SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES OF JOURNALISM, METHODS OF SOCIAL INVESTIGATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM. EXERCISES WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO IMPLEMENT THE COURSE CONTENTS BY DESIGNING AND CARRYING OUT ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS. |
