Objectives
THIS COURSE EMBRACES A CRITICAL APPROACH TO ALL THOSE SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROCESSES THAT HAVE DRIVEN THE VERY DEFINITION OF CONTEMPORARY SUBJECTIVITY. IN THIS PERSPECTIVE, VARIOUS SOCIAL THEORIES FOCUSED ON THE NEOLIBERALISM/SUBJECTIVITY NEXUS, AS WELL AS METHODOLOGIES EMPLOYED IN THE ANALYSIS, WILL BE THOROUGHLY ADDRESSED. RISK, FLEXIBILITY, DISCIPLINE: WORK WILL BE STUDIED WITHIN ITS BROADER CULTURAL DIMENSION, I.E. AS A SOCIAL PHENOMENON NOT LIMITED TO THE PRODUCTION DOMAIN, BUT AFFECTING ALL SUBJECTS’ LIVES INVOLVED IN THE WORKING PROCESS.

THE COURSE IS DESIGNED TO ENABLE PARTICIPANTS ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE OF THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL ASPECTS RELATED TO NEO-LIBERALISM AND CONTEMPORARY FORMS OF SUBJECTIVITY. IT IS ALSO FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING STUDENTS’ COMPREHENSION OF ACADEMIC LITERATURE AND ITS RELEVANCE IN TODAY’S SOCIAL WORLD.

BY THE END OF THE COURSE, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE IN THE POSITION TO APPLY THEIR ACQUIRED THEORETICAL AND METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE TO A RANGE OF ISSUES ARISING FROM NEO-LIBERAL POLICIES AND ALSO RELATED TO THE SPHERE OF SUBJECTIVITY, PROVIDING A CRITICAL AND EMPIRICALLY BASED VIEW OF THEM, PROPERLY ELABORATED IN RESEARCH REPORTS, ESSAYS AND ORAL PRESENTATIONS THROUGH WHICH THEY COULD ADVANCE ORIGINAL AND INNOVATIVE HYPOTHESES AND INTERPRETATIONS.

STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DEVELOP AN INDEPENDENT REFLECTION ON THE WAYS IN WHICH NEOLIBERAL SOCIETY CONSIDER AND TREATS LABOR, LEADING AT PERSONAL JUDGMENTS ON SUCH TREATMENT METHODS.

STUDENTS WILL BE EMPOWERED TO ENGAGE IN CONTINUAL DIALOGUES WITH THE PROFESSOR AND PEERS THROUGH DIALECTICAL DISCUSSIONS AND VERIFIABLE REASONING. THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS WILL BE STIMULATED THROUGH INTERVENTIONS ON KEY CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL ISSUES AND THROUGH IN-CLASS COMMENTARY ON NARRATIVES, NOVELS, NEWSPAPER ARTICLES, FILMS, AND TV SERIES RELEVANT TO THE COURSE TOPICS.

STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP LEARNING CAPABILITIES THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO CONFIDENTLY USE THE RESOURCES PROVIDED BY TRADITIONAL LIBRARIES AND ONLINE DATABASES, AS WELL AS ALL MATERIALS AVAILABLE IN DIGITAL AUDIOVISUAL ARCHIVES. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANALYZE TEXTS OF VARIOUS KINDS, RANGING FROM MORE TRADITIONAL WRITTEN FORMS, SUCH AS NOVELS AND NEWSPAPERS, TO CONTEMPORARY ONES PREDOMINANTLY ASSOCIATED WITH IMAGES SUCH AS COMICS, CINEMA, AND SOCIAL MEDIA. NAVIGATING THROUGH DIFFERENT SOURCES AND ANALYZING TEXTS WILL ENABLE THEM TO CONTINUOUSLY UPDATE THEIR LEARNING PROCESSES.

Contents
THE COURSE AIMS TO EXPLORE THE CAPITAL-LABOR CONFLICT FROM A CULTURALIST VIEWPOINT, USING KEY CONCEPTUAL TERMS IN SOCIAL THEORY AND RESEARCH SUCH AS ALIENATION, DISCIPLINING, FLEXIBILITY, CONTROL, AND UNEMPLOYMENT. THE THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK WILL BE CONNECTED TO A SERIES OF HISTORICAL-SOCIAL PHENOMENA INVOLVING MEN AND WOMEN BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE WORKPLACE. THESE ARE INDIVIDUALS WHO, BY ORGANIZING THEMSELVES, HAVE SOUGHT TO PROVIDE AN EMANCIPATORY RESPONSE TO THE MECHANISMS OF DISCIPLINING AND EXPLOITATION TYPICAL OF A SOCIETY ORGANIZED ACCORDING TO THE INDIVIDUALISTIC AND COMPETITIVE PRINCIPLES OF CAPITALIST PRODUCTION, BOTH DURING THE FORDIST AND POST-FORDIST PERIODS. THIS INCLUDES THE ALGERIAN ANTI-COLONIAL STRUGGLES, THE NOMADIC AND LABOR DISPUTES OF AMERICAN HOBOS AND WOBBLIES, THE AUTONOMY OF INTELLECTUAL PRECARITY, ANONYMOUS’S DIGITAL SABOTAGE ACTIONS, AND THE LABOR MOVEMENTS OF UNEMPLOYED WORKERS IN NAPLES.
Teaching Methods
THIS COURSE IS COMPOSED OF LECTURES THAT WILL ENABLE PARTICIPANTS TO BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH THE MAIN CRITICAL SOCIAL THEORIES ON ALIENATED LABOUR, FORDISM AND NEO-LIBERALISM.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAMINATION IS AN ORAL TEST AIMED AT VERIFYING THE SUCCESSFUL UNDERSTANDING OF THEORIES, METHODS AND CASE STUDIES AS WELL AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROPER CRITICAL ATTITUDE.
