THE MAIN GOAL OF THIS COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO A CRITICAL UNDERSTANDING OF SOCIAL PHENOMENA RELATED TO ENVIRONMENT, FROM POLLUTION TO FOOD SOPHISTICATION AND ECOLOGICAL DISASTERS. JOURNALISTIC INVESTIGATION WILL HELP STUDENTS DEVELOP INVESTIGATIVE SKILLS THAT WILL LEAD THEM TO A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND POLITICAL REASONS BEHIND THE SO-CALLED ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM. STUDENTS WILL GAIN KNOWLEDGE OF THE HISTORY, THEORIES AND METHODOLOGIES OF JOURNALISTIC INVESTIGATION. FURTHERMORE, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS PARTICULAR INVESTIGATIVE GENRE AND JOURNALISM AND, MORE GENERALLY, BETWEEN THE INFORMATION SYSTEM AND THE EVOLUTION OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY CAPITALIST SOCIETY. PARTICIPANTS ARE EXPECTED TO PROVE THEIR ABILITY IN IMPLEMENTING THE ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE THROUGH A NUMBER OF WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES IN WHICH THEY WILL TRAIN THEMSELVES TO DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISTIC INVESTIGATIONS BASED ON THE THEORIES, METHODS AND CASES STUDIED DURING THE COURSE. STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE OF DEVELOPING AN INDEPENDENT REFLECTION ON HOW CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY ADDRESSES CLIMATE CHANGE, ESPECIALLY THROUGH THE DEBATES UNFOLDING IN BOTH ANALOG AND DIGITAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS. THEY WILL ALSO FORMULATE PERSONAL JUDGMENTS ON THIS SOCIETY THROUGH THE CREATION OF INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM PROJECTS ORGANIZED AND CONDUCTED IN CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH COURSE PEERS. STUDENTS WILL BE EMPOWERED TO ENGAGE IN CONTINUAL DIALOGUES WITH THE PROFESSOR AND PEERS THROUGH DIALECTICAL DISCUSSIONS AND VERIFIABLE REASONING. THEIR COMMUNICATION SKILLS WILL BE STIMULATED THROUGH INTERVENTIONS ON KEY CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL ISSUES AND THROUGH IN-CLASS COMMENTARY ON NARRATIVES, NOVELS, NEWSPAPER ARTICLES, FILMS, AND TV SERIES RELEVANT TO THE COURSE TOPICS. STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP LEARNING CAPABILITIES THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO CONFIDENTLY USE THE RESOURCES PROVIDED BY TRADITIONAL LIBRARIES AND ONLINE DATABASES, AS WELL AS ALL MATERIALS AVAILABLE IN DIGITAL AUDIOVISUAL ARCHIVES. THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANALYZE TEXTS OF VARIOUS KINDS, RANGING FROM MORE TRADITIONAL WRITTEN FORMS, SUCH AS NOVELS AND NEWSPAPERS, TO CONTEMPORARY ONES PREDOMINANTLY ASSOCIATED WITH IMAGES SUCH AS COMICS, CINEMA, AND SOCIAL MEDIA. NAVIGATING THROUGH DIFFERENT SOURCES AND ANALYZING TEXTS WILL ENABLE THEM TO CONTINUOUSLY UPDATE THEIR LEARNING PROCESSES. |

AMONG THE COUNTLESS GENRES AND SUB-GENRES OF JOURNALISM, INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN THE FIELD OF HUMAN SCIENCES. WHILE ITS METHODS (SOURCING, VERIFYING RELIABILITY, FIELD OBSERVATION, INTERVIEWS, AND CONSULTING WEB DATABASES) BRINGS IT VERY CLOSE TO QUALITATIVE SOCIAL RESEARCH, ITS MAIN GOAL, NAMELY REPORTING THE TRUTH ABOUT INCONVENIENT AND DANGEROUS SOCIAL PHENOMENA (WARS, CORRUPTION, AND CRIME) PLACES IT WITHIN THE GREAT TRADITION OF PHILOSOPHICAL RESEARCH. THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO INTRODUCE STUDENTS TO THIS MILITANT FORM OF CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE SOCIAL WORLD THROUGH A GRADUAL AND STRUCTURAL PATH. THE FIRST SECTION CENTERS ON THE ANALYSIS OF KARL MARX'S JOURNALISTIC WORK, EXAMINING THE MOST SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS OF HIS WORK AS A PUBLICIST, FROM HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE RHEINISCHE ZEITUNG TO HIS ARTICLES IN THE NEW YORK DAILY TRIBUNE. FROM THIS EXTENSIVE BODY OF WORK WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED ITS STRONG SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE, ADDRESSING THE CRITICAL ISSUES OF HIS TIME, ALL ROOTED IN THE RISE OF CAPITALISM: THESE INCLUDE THE ONES RELATED TO THE INFORMATION SPHERE (THE ROLE OF THE PRESS, THE FORMATION OF PUBLIC OPINION) AS WELL AS THOSE CONCERNING CLASS ANALYSIS (POVERTY, THE PROLETARIAT, AND LABOR STRUGGLES). THE DEFINITION OF THIS MARXIAN MODEL OF SOCIOLOGICAL JOURNALISM WILL BE FURTHER EXPANDED THROUGH AN EXPLORATION OF THE TRANSFORMATIONS THAT THE JOURNALISTIC PROFESSION IS UNDERGOING WITH THE RISE OF THE INTERNET. THE SECOND SECTION ADDRESSES THE ORIGINS OF SOCIAL INVESTIGATION, AS IT WAS INITIALLY CONFIGURED THROUGH MARX'S FOUNDATIONAL WORKERS' INQUIRY OF 1880, MAINTAINING SUBSTANTIAL CONTINUITY WITH HIS JOURNALISTIC WORK. SUBSEQUENTLY, THE FORMATION OF SOCIAL INVESTIGATION IN ITALY WILL BE STUDIED, A GENRE WITH A DISTINGUISHED TRADITION ESTABLISHED AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR. THIS TRADITION WAS INITIALLY SHAPED NOT ONLY BY PROFESSIONAL SOCIOLOGISTS BUT ALSO BY WRITERS AND JOURNALISTS DRIVEN BY A DEEP SENSE OF CIVIC COMMITMENT. THE THIRD PART PROJECTS ITSELF IN MEDIA RES, PRIVILEGING ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM AS A FORM OF INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM. WILL BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION THOSE INVESTIGATIONS THAT ARE ABLE TO CONNECT ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS TO THE INDUSTRIAL SYSTEM AND THE IMPACT OF CAPITALIST PRODUCTION ON HUMAN HEALTH, AS IN THE CASE OF THE ILVA PLANT IN TARANTO. THE FOURTH PART STARTS FROM TINA MERLIN’S INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM ON THE VAJONT DISASTER TO HIGHLIGHT ITS RELEVANCE TO THE CURRENT PARADIGM OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE. THE COURSE ALSO INCLUDES WORKSHOP ACTIVITIES IN WHICH STUDENTS WILL PRACTICE WRITING SURVEYS BASED ON THEORIES, METHODS AND TOPICS ADDRESSED DURING THE COURSE. |

THE COURSE IS STRUCTURED IN LECTURES AND IN-CLASS EXERCISES. LECTURES WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE ON THE MAIN SOCIOLOGICAL THEORIES OF JOURNALISM, METHODS OF SOCIAL INVESTIGATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM. EXERCISES WILL ENABLE STUDENTS TO IMPLEMENT THE COURSE CONTENTS BY DESIGNING AND CARRYING OUT ENVIRONMENTAL INVESTIGATIONS. |
Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE FINAL EXAMINATION IS AN ORAL TEST AIMED AT VERIFYING THE SUCCESSFUL UNDERSTANDING OF THEORIES, METHODS AND CASE STUDIES AS WELL AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PROPER CRITICAL ATTITUDE. STUDENTS WILL REACH THE HIGHEST SCORE BY DEMONSTRATING HIGH ACCURACY, APPROPRIATE HISTORICAL-CONCEPTUAL ARTICULATION, AND FULL MASTERY OF DISCIPLINARY LANGUAGE |
