Objectives | |

A. The course aims to analyze the development of philosophical thought between V and XIV century as a meeting point between theological and philosophical speculation. The course will illustrate through the analysis of the doctrines of the greatest thinkers of the Middle Ages, the original and intricate connection between the Bible and pagan culture, but also the interactions between the theological knowledge of the three great monotheistic religions that shared cultural space of the Mediterranean Sea. B. The course will analyze the role and characteristics of the philosophy of language in the early middle ages, with particular reference to the speculation of Augustine of Hippo. |

THE COURSE WILL START WITH A BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE FIRST CHRISTIAN SPECULATION, FROM JUSTIN TO AUGUSTINE. THE COURSE WILL ANALYZE: THE EARLY MIDDLE AGES (SECC. V-XII), OR DEVELOPMENT OF THE PLATONIC-AUGUSTINIAN PARADIGM, THE AGE OF SCHOLASTICISM (XIII-XIV). B. The course will analyze in the first part the characteristics of the linguistics in the early centuries of the Christian era and the influence of Greek philosophy. In the second part we will focus on the analysis of Augustine''s De magistro. |
