WHY STUDY MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY? THE COURSE WILL OFFER A REFLECTION ON THE CHARACTERISTICS, POTENTIAL, AND LIMITATIONS OF THE HISTORICAL-PHILOSOPHICAL STUDY OF THE MIDDLE AGES. TO THIS END, THE COURSE WILL ATTEMPT TO VERIFY THE VALIDITY OF A HYPOTHESIS THAT IS BOTH 'CONTINUIST' AND 'DISCONTINUIST', MEANING IT WILL SHOW THE POINTS OF TANGENCY AND THE DISTANCES BETWEEN MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHICAL THEMES AND CONTEMPORARY ONES. 1. MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY IN THE 20TH CENTURY (12H) THE FIRST PART WILL ANALYZE THE PRESENCE OF THEMES AND FIGURES FROM MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY IN THE REFLECTIONS OF SOME OF THE MAJOR THINKERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY TO VERIFY, ON ONE HAND, THE FIDELITY OF THESE INTERPRETATIONS TO THE ORIGINAL TEXTS AND, ON THE OTHER, THE ROLE THAT MEDIEVAL THOUGHT PLAYS IN CONSTRUCTING THE PHILOSOPHICAL IDENTITY OF THE 20TH CENTURY. 2. MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY IN HISTORIOGRAPHY (12H) THE SECOND PART WILL PROVIDE THE COORDINATES OF THE HISTORY OF THE DEBATE ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDYING MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY, FROM ITS HEGELIAN ORIGINS TO THE PRESENT DAY. 3. THE HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY TODAY (6H) IN THE THIRD PART, METHODOLOGICAL PROPOSALS ON THE 'CONTEMPORARY' VALIDITY OF THIS STUDY WILL BE PUT FORWARD AND DISCUSSED. |

Verification of learning | |
---|---|
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL TEST AIMED AT VERIFYING THE STUDENT'S PREPARATION AND ABILITY TO USE THE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECT IN THE FIELD OF THE HISTORY OF MEDIAEVAL PHILOSOPHY. DURING THE INTERVIEW, THROUGH THE READING AND COMMENTARY OF TEXTS ANALYZED IN CLASS, THE ABILITY TO CLEARLY AND UNAMBIGUOUSLY COMMUNICATE THE ACQUIRED CONTENT AND METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE WILL BE EVALUATED. THE MAXIMUM LEVEL (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE, AND A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF THE TEXTS DISCUSSED DURING THE LESSONS. HONORS (CUM LAUDE) ARE AWARDED WHEN THE CANDIDATE SHOWS FULL MASTERY OF THE LINGUISTIC TOOLS AND VOCABULARY SPECIFIC TO THE DISCIPLINE, AND AN AUTONOMOUS ABILITY TO CONNECT DIFFERENT THEMES AND CONCEPTS DURING THE COURSE OF THE INTERVIEW. |
