THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS TO PROVIDE A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF LATIN PHILOSOPHICAL LEXICON, WITH A PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO SPECIFIC AREAS OF INTEREST.

- APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

ABILITY TO NAVIGATE THE LATIN TEXT
- BASIC ABILITY TO TRANSLATE THE TEXT
- ABILITY TO IDENTIFY SYNTACTIC-GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES

THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO READ THE LATIN TEXT, IDENTIFY ITS BASIC FORMAL AND CONTENT-RELATED ASPECTS, AND DISCUSS THEM BY COMPARING DIFFERENT OR SIMILAR PASSAGES AND/OR LINGUISTIC ELEMENTS.

READING AND COMMENTARY OF BOETHIUS' 'CONSOLATION OF PHILOSOPHY'

HISTORICAL INTRODUCTION (4H)
IN THE FIRST PART OF THE COURSE, AN INTRODUCTION TO EARLY MEDIEVAL THOUGHT AND BOETHIUS' PLACE IN THIS CONTEXT WILL BE PROVIDED.
INTRODUCTION TO THE TEXT (4H)
IN THE SECOND PART, WE WILL DISCUSS THE ROLE THAT THE CONSOLATION PLAYED IN BOETHIUS' THOUGHT AND THE FORTUNE OF THE TEXT IN SUBSEQUENT CENTURIES.
READING AND COMMENTARY (22H)
AFTER THE INTRODUCTORY PART, THE COURSE WILL PROCEED TO READ BOETHIUS' TEXT, TRANSLATING AND COMMENTING ON THE MOST IMPORTANT PASSAGES.
Teaching Methods
THE COURSE INCLUDES LESSONS. IN EACH LESSON A PART OF THE TEXT WILL BE READ, TRANSLATED AND COMMENTED TO SHOW THE FORMAL, LEXICAL AND PHILOSOPHY STRUCTURES
Verification of learning
THE EXAM CONSISTS OF AN ORAL TEST. THE STUDENT'S ABILITY TO READ PHILOSOPHICAL TEXTS WILL BE VERIFIED. DURING THE INTERVIEW, THROUGH THE READING AND COMMENTARY OF TEXTS ANALYZED IN CLASS, THE ABILITY TO CLEARLY AND UNAMBIGUOUSLY COMMUNICATE THE ACQUIRED CONTENT AND METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE WILL BE EVALUATED.

THE MAXIMUM LEVEL (30) IS AWARDED WHEN THE STUDENT DEMONSTRATES A COMPLETE AND IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE OF THE THEORETICAL CONTENTS OF THE COURSE, AND A FULL UNDERSTANDING OF THE TEXTS DISCUSSED DURING THE LESSONS.

HONORS (CUM LAUDE) ARE AWARDED WHEN THE CANDIDATE SHOWS FULL MASTERY OF THE LINGUISTIC TOOLS AND VOCABULARY SPECIFIC TO THE DISCIPLINE, AND AN AUTONOMOUS ABILITY TO CONNECT DIFFERENT THEMES AND CONCEPTS DURING THE COURSE OF THE INTERVIEW.
