THE COURSE PROVIDES A CULTURAL BACKGROUND FOR THE FOLLOWING COURSE OF SNS, GIVING BASIC KNOWLEDGE NECESSARY TO UNDERSTAND THE MAIN CHEMICAL PHENOMENA. MOREOVER, IT WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ABOUT THE QUANTITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN SUBSTANCES UNDERGOING CHEMICAL REACTIONS. THE MAIN ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE WILL BE: -AN OUTLINE OF HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY; - BASIC KNOWLEDGE ON STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF MATTER; - KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PRINCIPLES OF CHEMICAL REACTIVITY; -FAMILIARIZATION WITH STOICHIOMETRIC CALCULATIONS. -FOUNDATIONS OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY BY FOCUSING ON THE STRUCTURES, PROPERTIES AND CHEMICAL REACTIVITY OF THE VARIOUS HYBRIDIZATION STATES CARBON ATOMS CAN ADOPT IN ALKANES (INCLUDING CYCLOALKANES), ALKENES AND ALKYNES. -ISOMERISM OBSERVED IN ORGANIC COMPOUNDS AS WELL AS THE REACTIONS’ MECHANISMS (SUBSTITUTION, ELIMINATION, AND ADDITION) IN TERMS OF THE ELECTRONS FLOW. -STRUCTURE AND SYNTHESIS OF CARBON NANOSTRUCTURES. THE MAIN ABILITIES WILL BE: -TO USE A SUITABLE CHEMICAL LANGUAGE; -TO SOLVE STOICHIOMETRIC PROBLEMS; -TO USE THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD OF INVESTIGATION. |

THE COURSE (140 H) IS DIVIDED IN 2 MODULES: ONE OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY AND ANOTHER OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. THE MODULE OF GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY (84 HOURS) IS DIVIDED INTO LESSONS AND EXERCISES AS FOLLOWS: LESSONS (6 CFU, 48 HOURS). EXERCISES (3 CFU, 36 HOURS). THE MODULE OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY PROVIDES 48 HOURS OF TEACHING DIVIDED BETWEEN LECTURES (41 HOURS) AND CLASSROOM EXERCISES (7 HOURS). TO ATTEND THEORETICAL LESSONS IS NOT MANDATORY BUT STRONGLY SUGGESTED. |

DURING THE COURSE THERE WILL BE PARTIAL ASSESSMENTS TESTS IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE KNOWLEDGE LEVEL GAINED BY THE STUDENTS. THE FIRST AT THE END OF THE MODULE OD GENERAL AND INORGANIC CHEMISTRY WILL INVOLVE A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL TEST. THE SECOND, AT THE OF THE ORGANIC CHEMISTRY MODULE, WILL INVOLVE A WRITTEN AND AN ORAL TEST, AS WELL. THE FINAL GRADE WILL BE THE AVERAGE OF THE TWO TESTS. FOR THE STUDENTS WHO DIDN'T PASS THE TESTS, A FINAL WRITTEN AND ORAL EXAM IS REQUIRED. AS FOR THE FINAL EVALUATION, FOLLOWING POINTS WILL BE CONSIDERED: - KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING DEGREE OF THE CLASS TOPICS. - WRITTEN OR ORAL CLARITY SKILLS - DEDUCTIVE REASONING AND THINKING SKILLS MINIMUM SCORE (18/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH SUPERFICIAL KNOWLEDGE AND LIMITED COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS SUFFICIENT CLARITY SKILLS. MAXIMUM SCORE (30/30) WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH DEEP KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS RIGOROUS CLARITY SKILLS AND GOOD DEDUCTIVE REASONING AND THINKING SKILLS SCORE OF 30/30 CUM LAUDE WILL BE ATTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS WITH EXCELLENT KNOWLEDGE AND COMPREHENSION OF TOPICS AS WELL AS EXCELLENT CLARITY SKILLS AND DEDUCTIVE REASONING AND THINKING SKILLS. |
