EDUCATIONAL AIMS THE COURSE AIMS TO ILLUSTRATE THE THEORETICAL-CONCEPTUAL FOUNDATIONS AND ANALYTICAL CATEGORIES THAT ARE OF PARTICULAR RELEVANCE FOR THE INTERPRETATION OF POLITICAL PHENOMENA, ANALYSED FROM A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE, AND TO DEAL CRITICALLY WITH BOTH THE THEORIES ELABORATED BY THE FATHERS OF SOCIOLOGY AND THE MOST WIDESPREAD AND ACCREDITED CONCEPTUAL APPARATUSES AMONG CONTEMPORARY SOCIOLOGISTS KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING IT IS PROPOSED THAT STUDENTS ACQUIRE THE MAIN CONCEPTS AND THE MOST RELEVANT THEORIES CONCERNING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIETY AND POLITICS AND IN PARTICULAR THE FORMS OF POLITICAL POWER AS AN EXPRESSION OF THE DIALECTICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ORGANISATIONS OF POLITICS AND WIDESPREAD POLITICAL CULTURE. ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING IT IS INTENDED THAT STUDENTS APPLY THEORIES AND CONCEPTS DERIVED FROM BOTH CLASSICAL AND MORE RECENT LITERATURE AND DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE ANALYSIS OF POLITICAL PHENOMENA, PAYING PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE PROCESSES OF POLITICAL PERSONALISATION, THE COMPOSITION OF POLITICAL ELITES AS A RESULT OF THE CULTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS THAT CROSS DEMOCRATIC SOCIETIES. TO THIS END, STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THE MOST APPROPRIATE EMPIRICAL TESTING METHODOLOGIES. |

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL CHANGE AND POLITICAL CHANGE WILL BE THE GENERAL OBJECT OF THE COURSE. IT WILL BE ILLUSTRATED BY REFERRING TO THE WORK OF THE CLASSICAL AUTHORS OF POLITICAL SOCIOLOGY AND THE MOST RECENT RESEARCH PERSPECTIVES AT NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LEVEL. THE FIRST PART OF THE TEACHING WILL BE DEVOTED TO CENTRAL ISSUES IN POLITICAL AND SOCIAL SCIENCES SUCH AS COMMUNITY, POWER, POLITICAL CULTURE, POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION, POLITICAL ELITES. THE SECOND PART WILL FOCUS ON THE STUDY OF THE INSTITUTIONAL AND SOCIAL CONDITIONS THAT HAVE MADE DEMOCRACY POSSIBLE AND GUARANTEE ITS FUNCTIONING. IN PARTICULAR, THE BIRTH AND EVOLUTION OF CONTEMPORARY DEMOCRATIC REGIMES, THEIR MAIN CHARACTERISTICS, THE CHALLENGES TO WHICH THEY ARE SUBJECTED WITH PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE PHENOMENON OF POPULISM. THE THIRD PART OF THE TEACHING WILL EXPLORE, WITH A PROBLEMATIC APPROACH, SOME ASPECTS OF ITALIAN POLITICS THAT ARE AT THE CENTRE OF THE MOST RECENT PUBLIC DEBATE AND REQUIRE PARTICULAR ATTENTION: THE CRISIS OF TRADITIONAL POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AND THE DECLINE IN VOTER TURNOUT; THE TRANSFORMATION DYNAMICS OF POLITICAL SUBJECTS SUCH AS PARTIES; THE EVOLUTION OF MOVEMENTS; PRIMARY ELECTIONS AND SELECTION OF CANDIDATES; PERSONALIZATION AND CLIENTELISM. TO SUMMARIZE, THE TOPICS OF THE COURSE WILL BE THE FOLLOWING: POWER, POLITICAL ELITES, COMMUNITY, POLITICAL CULTURE, POLITICAL SOCIALIZATION, CONTEMPORARY DEMOCRACIES, POPULISM, MOVEMENTS, PARTIES, PRIMARIES AND FORMATION OF LEADERSHIP GROUPS, ABSTENTION, PERSONALIZATION, AND CLIENTELISM. |
Teaching Methods | |

LECTURES, EXERCISES, SEMINARS. THE TRADITIONAL TEACHING APPROACH (LECTURES FOR THE PRESENTATION OF CONTENTS) WILL BE INTEGRATED BY INNOVATIVE METHODS, WITH THE AIM OF ENCOURAGING INTERACTION AMONG STUDENTS WHO, ABOVE ALL DURING THE SEMINARS, WILL BE STIMULATED TO BE ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS IN THE DISCUSSION. FURTHERMORE, WE WILL TRY TO STIMULATE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO CRITICALLY AND CONSCIOUSLY APPLY CONCEPTS AND THEORIES TO EMPIRICAL RESEARCH THROUGH THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN EXERCISES ON SPECIFIC RESEARCH TOPICS. |
Verification of learning | |

ORAL EXAMINATION. THE VERIFICATION OF LEARNING WILL TAKE PLACE THROUGH THE ORAL INTERVIEW ON THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE. THE OVERALL ASSESSMENT WILL BE AWARDED TAKING INTO ACCOUNT TWO CRITERIA: A) THE ABILITY TO REFER IN CORRECT LANGUAGE TO THE CONTENTS OF THE RECOMMENDED TEXTS AND ESPECIALLY WITH REFERENCE TO THE DEFINITIONS OF CONCEPTS AND THEORIES AND THE RELEVANT THEORETICAL REFERENCES; B) THE PROPERTY OF LANGUAGE AND THE SIGNIFICANT CAPACITY FOR AUTONOMOUS ELABORATION AND CRITICAL RE-ELABORATION OF THE EXAMINATION TOPICS. STUDENTS WHO SHOW IN THE COURSE OF THE ORAL EXAMINATION THAT THEY HAVE MET AT LEAST THE FIRST CRITERION WILL BE AWARDED A MARK OF BETWEEN 18 AND 25. STUDENTS WHO SHOW THAT THEY HAVE MET BOTH OF THE ABOVE ASSESSMENT CRITERIA WILL BE AWARDED A HIGHER MARK, I.E. BETWEEN 26 AND 30 WITH DISTINCTION. |
