Objectives
THE COURSE FOCUSES ON THE CHALLENGE POSED BY BIG DATA TO SOCIAL RESEARCH. THE COURSE AIMS TO INTRODUCE THEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL ASPECTS RELATED TO THE USE OF QUANTITATIVE METHODS FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH DECLINED IN A MODERN KEY AND APPLIED WITH THE HELP OF APPROPRIATE SOFTWARE TOOLS.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
THE THEORETICAL ASPECTS RELATED TO THE BIRTH OF COMPUTATIONAL SOCIAL SCIENCE WILL BE ADDRESSED, FRAMING THE CULTURAL CONTEXT OF REFERENCE OF THE NEW DISCIPLINE AND HIGHLIGHTING RISKS AND OPPORTUNITIES. WE WILL EXAMINE HOW THE CATEGORIES OF NUMBER, TEXT AND RELATIONSHIP, TOGETHER WITH THE NOTION OF METADATA, EXPAND THE KNOWLEDGE BASE OF THE MODERN SOCIAL RESEARCHER. NEW QUESTIONS AND NEW SKILLS EMERGE AS POSSIBILITIES TO DEFINE OR REDEFINE KNOWLEDGE MODELS THAT RESPOND TO AN INCREASINGLY COMPLEX, HETEROGENEOUS AND MULTIVARIATE SOCIAL CONTEXT.

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
FROM THE APPLICATION POINT OF VIEW, THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO INTERCEPT THE MASS OF DATA PRESENT IN SOCIAL MEDIA, TO RECOGNIZE NON-TRADITIONAL DATA STRUCTURES (TEXTUAL DATA, RELATIONAL DATA, FLOW DATA). THE USE OF SPECIALIZED STATISTICAL SPECIALIZED STATISTICAL SOFTWARE WILL BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF TEACHING. DATA COLLECTION AND ORGANIZATION SKILLS, USE OF ADVANCED ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES (DATA MINING, TEXTUAL DATA ANALYSIS, NETWORK ANALYSIS) AND REPORTING TECHNIQUES - ALSO INTEGRATING NOTIONS LEARNED IN OTHER COURSES - WILL COMPLETE THE STUDENT'S SKILLS PROFILE.

USE OF DIDACTIC LABORATORIES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF PRACTICAL SKILLS AND EXERCISES FOR THE REFINEMENT OF SKILLS.
DIDACTIC SEMINARS FOR IN-DEPTH STUDY
TUTORIAL APPROACH AND DISCUSSION FOR THE ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF STUDENTS IN THE LABORATORY PRACTICE.
Verification of learning
THE FINAL EXAM CONSISTS OF THE ELABORATION AND DISCUSSION OF A STATISTICAL REPORT ON A CASE STUDY AGREED WITH THE TEACHER AND DESIGNED AS A GROUP WORK.
THE TEST WILL CONSIDER THE ABILITY OF EACH MEMBER OF THE WORKING GROUP TO WORK INDEPENDENTLY, THE ABILITY 'TO OPERATIONALIZE THE CONCEPT OF THE OBJECT OF ANALYSIS, THE ABILITY' TO PROCESS DATA WITH DEDICATED SOFTWARE AND THE ABILITY 'TO COMMENT CRITICALLY ON THE RESULTS
