KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
THE AIM OF THE COURSE IS A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE MECHANICS OF A SINGLE PARTICLE, A SYSTEM OF PARTICLES, THE RIGID BODY, THE FLUIDS, AS WELL AS OF THE GEOMETRICAL OPTICS. THE GENERAL THEORY IS EXTENSIVELY ILLUSTRATED WITH PRACTICAL EXAMPLES AND APPLICATIONS.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:
AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE COURSE, STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ABLE TO: 1) UNDERSTAND THE PHYSICS UNDERLYING THE BEHAVIOR OF A SINGLE PARTICLE, A SYSTEM OF PARTICLES, THE RIGID BODY, THE FLUIDS, AS WELL AS THE GEOMETRICAL OPTICS; 2) APPLY THE FUNDAMENTAL EQUATIONS OF MECHANICS; 3)IDENTIFY CONSERVATION LAWS AND REFER TO THEM WHEREVER POSSIBLE TO MAKE THE DESCRIPTION OF A PHYSICAL PHENOMENON EASIER; 4) SOLVE SIMPLE EXERCISES OF MECHANICS AND OPTICS.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS:
STUDENTS ARE URGED TO STUDY AND ANALYZE IN A CRITICAL WAY ALL THE TOPICS THAT ARE DISCUSSED DURING THE COURSE. THE IMPROVEMEMENT OF THEIR JUDGEMENT ABILILTY IS ALSO PURSUED BY MEANS OF NOTES AND TEXTBOOKS SUGGESTED BY THE TEACHER.

COMMUNICATION SKILL:
THE COURSE IS EXPECTED TO ENHANCE STUDENTS’ ABILITY TO HANDLE AND COMMUNICATE IN A CLEAR AND RIGOROUS WAY THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED DURING THE COURSE, WITH A SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE CORRECTNESS OF THE LOGICAL SEQUENCE OF THE TREATMENT OF A GIVEN TOPIC.
Prerequisites
BASIC NOTIONS OF TRIGONOMETRY, ANALYTIC GEOMETRY AND ANALYSIS OF SINGLE VARIABLE FUNCTIONS ARE REQUIRED.

Teaching Methods
THIS IS A 72-HOUR COURSE, CORRESPONDING TO 7 CFU. ABOUT HALF OF THE COURSE IS DEVOTED TO THEORETICAL LECTURES ON THE FUNDAMENTALS OF MECHANICS AND GEOMETRICAL OPTICS. THE REMAINING PART IS MORE TRAINING-FOCUSSED, AND AIMS AT ILLUSTRATING PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS AND AT DEVELOPING THE TECHNIQUES USED TO SOLVE CALCULUS-BASED PHYSICS EXERCISES.
Verification of learning
THE ASSESSMENT OF THE LEVEL OF LEARNING IS MADE THROUGH A FINAL EXAM CONSISTING OF A WRITTEN TEST FOLLOWED BY AN ORAL DISCUSSION. THE MAXIMUM SCORE IS 30. A THRESHOLD LEVEL (18) MUST BE REACHED IN THE WRITTEN TEST IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE ADMISSION TO THE ORAL DISCUSSION. THE WRITTEN TEST CONSISTS OF THE 3 OR MORE EXERCISES OF MECHGNICS AND GEOMETRICAL OPTICS. THE ORAL EXAM IS AIMED AT CHECKING HOW DEEP IS THE STUDENT'S UNDERSTANDING OF THE STUDIED TOPICS.
