Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: KNOWING SOCIAL RESEARCH METHODS EPISTEMOLOGY; KNOWING HOW TO READ AND INTERPRET DATA COMING FROM A QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH (CHARTS, TABLES, PLOTS, AND RESEARCH REPORTS) AND/OR FROM A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH (INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTS; RESEARCH REPORTS);

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: BEING ABLE TO WRITE A RIGOROUS RESEARCH DESIGN (BOTH QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE), BEING ABLE TO DEVELOP A RESEARCH CONCEPT MAP, KNOWING HOW TO CHOOSE INDICATORS, KNOWING HOW TO COLLECT AND ANALYZE DATA, BEING ABLE TO CONDUCT AN INTERVIEW (BOTH QUANTITATIVE AND QUALITATIVE), KNOWING HOW TO INTERPRET INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPTS ;

MAKING JUDGEMENTS: BEING ABLE TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT METHODOLOGICAL SOLUTION ACCORDING TO THE RESEARCH PURPOSES AND TO USE THE DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES;

COMMUNICATION: LEARNING HOW TO WRITE A WELL-DOCUMENTED AND METHODOLOGICALLY RIGOROUS RESEARCH PAPER;

LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS: TO ACQUIRE THE BASIC METHODOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE TO CARRY OUT MORE COMPLEX RESEARCH DESIGN AND TO PERFORM MORE SOPHISTICATED DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES.
Prerequisites
BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF MAIN SOCIAL RESEARCH PHILOSOPHICAL POSITIONS; BASIC MATHEMATIC SKILLS (QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH SECTION).

DEFINITIONS OF: METHODOLOGY, METHOD, TECHNIQUES.
EPISTEMOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS OF SOCIAL RESEARCH.
PRINCIPLES OF THE MOST COMMON RESEARCH METHODS: QUANTITATIVE, QUALITATIVE, MIXED METHODS, DIGITAL METHODS.
Teaching Methods
LECTURES (ACADEMIC TAUGHT LESSONS) AND PRACTICE SESSIONS ON COURSE TOPICS. PRACTICE SESSIONS RESULTS ARE NOT TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT IN THE FINAL EXAMINATION.
Verification of learning
EXAMINATION WILL BE WRITTEN AND ORAL ASSESSMENT.
WRITTEN TEST, CONSISTING OF 7 OPEN MANDATORY QUESTIONS AND TWO OPTIONAL QUESTIONS, AIMS TO EVALUATE HOW STUDENTS HAVE UNDERSTOOD THE CORE CONCEPTS OF THE COURSE AND, ABOVE AL,L HOW WELL THEY ARE ABLE TO APPLY THE LEARNED METHODOLOGICAL AND TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE IN A CONCRETE WAY.
ORAL TEST’S GOALS ARE TO TEST THE DEGREE OF LEARNING AND KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECTS OF THE COURSE; IT ALSO AIMS AT HOW STUDENTS HAVE DEVELOPED AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT AND CRITICAL ABILITY IN RELATION TO SPECIFIC SITUATIONS WHERE METHODOLOGICAL EXPERTISE IS REQUIRED.
THE OVERALL GRADE IS CALCULATED EVALUATING THE RESULTS OF BOTH WRITTEN AND ORAL ASSESSMENTS.
