COURSE AIM : THIS COURSE AIMS TO PROVIDE THE STUDENTS WITH THE NECESSARY UNDERSTANDING OF THE CHEMICAL AND CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL FUNDAMENTALS TO APPRECIATE HOW POLYMERIC MATERIALS BEHAVE DURING TRANSFORMATION AND RECYCLING PROCESSES, AS WELL AS THEIR POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: THE STUDENT WILL HAVE DEVELOPED UNDERSTANDING ON THE FOLLOWING TOPICS: -CLASSIFICATION OF POLYMERS. -CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS: -MOLECULAR WEIGHTS AND THEIR DISTRIBUTIONS -CHARACTERIZATION TECHNIQUES -RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOUR OF POLYMER MELTS -MECHANICAL CHARACTERISATION OF POLYMERS AND POLYMER COMPOSITES - POLYMER PROCESSING: EXTRUSION, INJECTION MOULDING, SPINNING, THERMOFORMING, COEXTRUSION. -RECYCLING OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING : THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: -EXPLAIN THE RESULTS OBTAINED FROM DIFFERENT ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES FOR CHARACTERIZING POLYMERS -IDENTIFY THE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN STRUCTURE, PROCESS, AND PROPERTIES OF POLYMERIC MATERIALS. -DEFINE THE MOST APPROPRIATE POLYMER AND PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY TO PRODUCE A SPECIFIC PRODUCT MAKING JUDGMENTS : THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO -DEVELOP CRITICAL SKILLS IN CHOOSING THE MOST EFFICIENT PROCESS STRATEGY FOR OBTAINING THE DESIRED MANUFACTURED POLYMER PRODUCT. -OPERATE ON A PROCESS TO PRODUCE A POLYMERIC MANUFACTURE BY ACTING ON ITS MAIN VARIABLES COMMUNICATION SKILLS: THE STUDENT WILL BE ABLE TO: - COMMUNICATE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED IN ORAL FORM USING APPROPRIATE SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY AND THE TOOLS OF MATHEMATICAL AND GRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF THE MAIN PHENOMENA DESCRIBED. BESIDE SOME BASIC INFORMATION ON THE STRUCTURE-PROPERTY RELATIONSHIP IN POLYMERIC MATERIALS, THIS COURSE REPRESENTS AN INTRODUCTION TO POLYMER PROCESSING TECHNOLOGIES. ORAL TEST EACH STUDENT WILL HAVE TO DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE RELATIONSHIPS EXISTING BETWEEN THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF A POLYMERIC MATERIAL, ITS CHEMICAL-STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS AND BE ABLE TO ASSOCIATE THE SPECIFIC CHEMICAL-PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A POLYMERIC MATERIAL OF INDUSTRIAL INTEREST WITH THE APPROPRIATE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES. STUDENTS WILL ALSO BE EVALUATED ON THEIR ABILITY TO CRITICALLY DISCUSS THE TOPICS ILLUSTRATED, ALONG WITH PROPOSING LINKS TO OTHER COURSES. THE TEST IS CONSIDERED PASSED WITH A SCORE GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 18 POINTS. |
