THE BIORGANIC CHEMISTRY COURSE AIMS TO ILLUSTRATE PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES AND MOLECULAR MECHANISMS THAT GOVERN INTERACTIONS AND REACTIONS IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS. AT THE END OF THE COURSE, THE STUDENT HAS TO POSSESS THE FOLLOWING SKILLS: 1. DESCRIBE THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES AT THE BASIS OF THE MOLECULAR INTERACTIONS IN BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS, 2. DESCRIBE THE MOLECULAR MECHANISMS OF BIOLOGICAL REACTIONS INVOLVING CO-ENZYMES AND VITAMINS, 3. DESCRIBE THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES AND MECHANISMS OF ENZYMATIC CATALYSIS AND INHIBITION OF THE ENZYME AND SOME IMPORTANT ENZYME SYSTEMS. |

INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE WITH SPECIFIC REFERENCES TO: CHEMICAL STRUCTURES OF THE FUNCTIONAL GROUPS OF BIOLOGICAL INTEREST; POLARITY OF THE MOLECULES AND INTERMOLECULAR FORCES; PROXIMITY EFFECTS IN ORGANIC REACTIONS, MOLECULAR ADAPTATION PHENOMENA; SUPRA-MOLECULAR RECOGNITION. CHEMISTRY OF THE PEPTIDE BOND. CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL ROLE OF PHOSPHATE GROUPS. GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF ENZYMATIC CATALYSIS AND THE STUDY OF SOME SPECIFIC MECHANISMS OF ACTION. MECHANISM OF ACTION OF THE CO-ENZYMES: NAD AND NADP, FAD, ASCORBIC ACID, PYRIDOXAL PHOSPHATE, BIOTIN, THIAMINE PYROPHOSPHATE, FOLIC ACID, VIT B12, VIT D, VIT A. MECHANISM OF ENZYME ACTION: SERINE PROTEASE, LYSOZYME, ASPARTIC PROTEASE, GSSG REDATTASI, HDAC, ALCOHOL DEHYDROGENASE, CARBOXY-PEPTIDASE ENZYME INHIBITORS. USE OF ENZYMES IN ORGANIC SYNTHESIS. |

THE TEACHING METHOD IS BASED ON LECTURES AND RELIES ON SLIDES PROJECTED TO GUIDE THE TRAINING AND THE ADOPTION OF TEXTS DEDICATED TO THE DEEPENING OF THE THEMES. THE FREQUENCY OF TEACHING HAS TO BE CONSIDERED MANDATORY, THE PROCEDURES FOR VERIFICATION OF THE FREQUENCY WILL BE COMMUNICATED TO THE STUDENTS BY THE TEACHERS; ANY ABSENCES WHICH MAY AFFECT THE ACQUISITION OF THE STATED EDUCATIONAL GOALS SHOULD BE OVERCOME BY CUSTOM ACTIVITIES PREPARED BY TEACHING HOLDERS. FACILITIES SHALL BE ACCORDED TO WORKING STUDENTS ACCORDING TO THE ACADEMIC REGULATIONS. |

THE EXAMINATION CONSISTS OF A WRITTEN TEST AND AN ORAL EXAM. THE WRITTEN TEST CONSISTS OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF A QUESTIONNAIRE COVERING THE TOPICS OF THE PROGRAM AND MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN 120 MINUTES. THE ORAL EXAM WILL FOCUS ON THE ENTIRE PROGRAM OF STUDY. THE WRITTEN AND ORAL TESTS ARE USED TO VERIFY THE LEVEL OF LEARNING OF KNOWLEDGE, THE CORRECT TERMINOLOGY, THE CAPACITY FOR ANALYSIS, WHICH SHOULD BE THE KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED. THE ASSESSMENT TAKES INTO ACCOUNT A TOTAL OF: LEVEL OF KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED; CAPACITY OF SYNTHESIS AND EXPOSURE, APPROPRIATENESS OF LANGUAGE; CAPACITY OF ANALYSIS. THE VERIFICATION PROCEDURES ARE DEEMED APPROPRIATE IN RELATION TO THE TEACHING OBJECTIVES, AND ALSO TO THE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS EXPECTED. THE FINAL MARK CONSISTS OF THE AVERAGE OF THE INTERMEDIATE SCORES OBTAINED IN THE TEST / AND WRITTEN, OF THE ORAL ONE VOTE, ALSO TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE PROGRESS IN LEARNING MAY BE REGISTERED BY THE STUDENT. |
